It'd make no sense to bump the #1 movie in the US for something else - unless another actual tentpole was coming.
I don't think Avatar will have any competition for the premium screens until perhaps February 10, which is the re-release of Titanic.

If not that, then Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantmania which is a week later.

Infinity Pool coming to IMAX! Seriously though, maybe Knock At The Cabin is going to get some IMAX screens? But yeah, I'd say that Avatar is the best thing to leave in IMAX until Titanic or Ant-Man.

Avatar will probably continue to outpace estimates because of the way they estimate Sunday grosses before the day is over. Because of its length, there are fewer showtimes than with shorter films, and the evening showtimes (which begin after the estimates for the day are made) have been behaving more like afternoon ones. Anecdotally I’m seeing a lot of local suburban late afternoon/early evening shows doing great walk up business, and those are just starting too late in the day to be folded into the estimates.

This is precisely why it is always important for those who want the full picture to look at the actual numbers when they are reported on Mondays. The Sunday estimates have their place in the news cycle, and they are a best guess by the studio as to how the afternoon and evening shows perform. But they would rather underestimate and report an increase than overestimate and then have to come back and revise the numbers down because the former is a better look.

For most films, the early weekend estimates released on Sunday morning tend to be pretty close to the final, within +/- $500k at a guess.

The pattern with Cameron’s films, however (starting with Titanic), has been underestimation compared to the final, often by several million.

MLK Weekend Box Office: ‘Avatar 2’ & ‘M3GAN’ To Prevail Despite Onslaught Of Gerard Butler’s ‘Plane’; ‘House Party’ & ‘Otto’ Expansion

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water will reign supreme in its fifth weekend over the four-day MLK holiday frame with an estimated take around $35M.

The Disney/20th Century Studios/Lightstorm title through yesterday raised its running total to $525.66M after a $4.5M Tuesday. The sequel will feasibly overtake the domestic total of its comp, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which finaled at $533.5M, in the next few days. Disney continues to have a majority of the PLFs and Dolby auditoriums. Last weekend’s saw 65% of its $45.8M take coming from premium formats.

Meanwhile, M3GAN, even though its on a 17-day theatrical window to PVOD, won’t stop. The Atomic Monster-Blumhouse title, which through yesterday counts $35M through five days, is expected to ring up between $17M-$20M in its second frame over the Friday-Monday span.

The Woman King is also coming back to 800+ screens.
Obviously, showtimes will vary from market to market, but my local theater is showing it once a day starting at 10:30pm. The movie would get out after 1am. I doubt very many people would choose to go to the theater at this time for a long movie when it is already widely available at home both on disc and streaming. I own the disc. But if I hadn't seen it already and was looking to catch up, I would opt for a streaming rental rather than a late night screening.

The same theater already had it twice before. The run in September when it opened lasted through most of October if I recall correctly. Then it went away for a while and came back over Thanksgiving weekend. Then it went away again a week or so later. I know that it is awards time now, and I love The Woman King. If I decided the Best Picture nominees, it would be in there for sure. But it seems to have lost steam with voters. Most of the nominations I've seen at this point seem to have recognized Viola Davis only, rather than the film itself. I'd love to be wrong, but I'm not really sure what re-releasing it at this time is going to accomplish. Unless it ends up with a Best Picture nomination, I don't know how much money is left to be made at this point. Oscar nomination voting is underway, but those people have screener access.

‘Avatar 2’ Rules With $35M 4-day, ‘M3GAN’ Moves $20M+, ‘Man Called Otto’ A Bright Spot For Adult Pics – MLK Weekend Box Office

FRIDAY AFTERNOON: As expected, Disney/20th Century Studios/Lightstorm’s Avatar: The Way of Water remains number one again in its fifth weekend with an MLK four-day take of $35M after a $7M Friday, -39% at 4,045 sites. 3-day looks to be around $27M-$28M, -40%.

That will get the James Cameron sequel to $566.7M at the domestic box office by EOD Monday, passing The Dark Knight ($534.9M) and Jon Favreau’s The Lion King ($543.6M) to become the 13th highest grossing movie of all-time in U.S Canada. By Monday, the movie will have been in theaters for 32 days. At that point in time a year ago, Spider-Man: No Way Home had already crossed the $700M threshold.

Avatar 2 has all the premium formats (Dolby, Imax, PLFs) again this weekend. They’ll cede Dolby auditoriums when Universal’s M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin hits theaters on Feb. 3.

Strong in second is Universal/Atomic Monster/Blumhouse’s M3GAN with a $5M second Friday, -57%, a 3-day of $17.5M, -42%, and a 4-day of $20.7M taking the pic’s 11-day running total to $59.2M.

Well, at least that's a little more reasonable than 10:30.

That's interesting and might spur additional business. My local theater (a Cinemark) is charging full price for it as they would for any new release.

"Fan Favorite" seems to be AMC's way of using unoccupied screens for "older" movies with the understanding most people won't pay full freight for a movie that's come and gone! :)

Moviegoing Happens Over MLK: ‘Avatar 2’ Now At $38M 4-day, ‘M3GAN’ Moves $21M+, ‘Puss In Boots 2‘ Hits $110M+, ’Otto’ Bright At $15M – Update

After a snowstorm laden Christmas weekend caused a lot of concern for exhibition and studios, MLK weekend has provided a lot of hope at the box office with all studios seeing an improved outlook on their estimates than they imagined.

Results for the top five films are higher, indicative of walk-up business.

Avatar: The Way of Water‘s 4-day is now at $38.5M, which still ranks as the 13th highest grossing movie at the domestic box office at $570.3M, taking over Jon Favreau’s The Lion King ($543.6M). How much gas does the movie have left in the tank? Rival distribution sources believe that Avatar 2 has a shot at flying pastthe lifetime US/Canada gross of James Cameron’s Titanic ($659.3M). While Sony has the horror thriller Missing next weekend, and there’s no major studio wide release on Jan. 27, the prediction is that Universal’s M. Night Shyamalan movie Knock at the Cabin on Feb. 3 is the first title that’s bound to knock Avatar 2 out of the No. 1 spot.

AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATERWalt Disney Studios/Everett Collection
Refresh for latest…: James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water continues to outdo itself having crossed $1.8B globally and reaching nearly $1.9B at the worldwide box office through this weekend. It should pass that next milestone early this coming week.
The estimated global cume through Sunday is $1.894B. It still ranks as the No. 7 biggest movie of all time. Ahead of it at No. 6 is Spider-Man: No Way Home with $1.921B, so it should overtake that soon.
After strong mid-weeks, the 20th Century Studios/Disney sequel added $88.6M at the international box office this weekend (-36%), bringing its offshore total to $1.331B. It remains the No. 5 biggest overseas release ever, behind Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Titanic and Avengers: Infinity War. It’s closing in on Infinity War ($1.37B) to jump up a notch on the international chart. It is already the top release internationally of the pandemic era.

Good legs for Puss in Boots 2. It dropped over 200 theaters this weekend but still remained essentially level with last weekend. Its lowest weekend of the four so far was its opening weekend.

One title I do not see anywhere on that list of estimates for the weekend is THE WOMAN KING.

Sony re-released it in 843 theaters (up from only 10 the previous week), and yet there are no new numbers for it. We know Sony was not late reporting grosses because they have A MAN CALLED OTTO in fourth place and I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY in ninth.

I suspect this means that any grosses for THE WOMAN KING this weekend were insignificant. I love the movie but, as I mentioned on Thursday, I wasn't sure there was much left on the table from the film's original release. This suggests that I was correct to e skeptical.

‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Tops $1.9B Global; Will Pass ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Today To Become No. 6 Movie Ever Worldwide – International Box Office

With Monday’s grosses included, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has topped $1.9B globally and is on its way to a new milestone through today when it will become the sixth biggest movie ever worldwide.

As we reported on Sunday (see below), when Way of Water jumps into the No. 6 slot, it will have overtaken Spider-Man: No Way Home. Through Monday, Way of Water has grossed $1,916.2M globally. Now, there has been some confusion over the final No Way Homeworldwide total, but we are told it is indeed $1.921B (whereas some charts have it at $1,916.3M) — either way, Avatar 2 will swim past No Way Home (which, it should be noted, did not release in China) when today’s figures will be tallied.
