Sony adds 360 Spatial Sound Mapping to premium soundbars

Sony announced a software update for the premium HT-A7000 and HT-A5000 soundbars last month. The company will add 360 Spatial Sound Mapping capabilities debuted on the HT-A9 home theater system in 2021. Sony says the feature can be accessed when connecting a soundbar to Sony’s SA-RS5 wireless rear speakers (launching this spring) or the currently available SA-RS3S wireless rears.

Using what Sony dubs ‘sound field optimization’, the soundbar uses built-in microphones to measure relative height and position to rear speakers. The 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology then creates multiple phantom speakers by synthesizing sound waves based on positional information. This should ensure that sound fills every part of the room, so everyone gets the same sound experience. Furthermore, pairing with a compatible BRAVIA XR display enables both the soundbar and TV to act as a center speaker for clearer, screen-locked dialogue performance.

The SA-RS5 optional wireless rear speakers feature upfiring, ceiling-reflecting drivers for better sound immersion, which can run for up to 10 hours on battery power. Ten minutes of charging time should ensure 90 minutes of use, but an AC power option is also included. Sony says the speakers feature wide directivity woofers, soft dome tweeters and dual passive radiators to enhance the soundstage.

By pressing the ‘Optimize’ buttons, the dual microphones in each speaker will measure the distance between speakers and ceiling. The product is also designed using an ‘omnidirectional block’ concept to match Sony’s compatible soundbars. The cylindrical shape represents a single solid block and the flat rear surface is designed to fit perfectly against a wall. The SA-RS5 will come with a suggested retail price of $599.99 and will be available to order in the spring 2022. For more information and specs from Sony, go here.
