Sony announced a software update for the premium HT-A7000 and HT-A5000 soundbars last month. The company will add 360 Spatial Sound Mapping capabilities debuted on the HT-A9 home theater system in 2021. Sony says the feature can be accessed when connecting a soundbar to Sony’s SA-RS5 wireless rear speakers (launching this spring) or the currently available SA-RS3S wireless rears.
Using what Sony dubs ‘sound field optimization’, the soundbar uses built-in microphones to measure relative height and position to rear speakers. The 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology then creates multiple phantom speakers by synthesizing sound waves based on positional information. This should ensure that sound fills every part of the room, so everyone gets the same sound experience. Furthermore, pairing with a compatible BRAVIA XR display enables both the soundbar and TV to act as a center speaker for clearer, screen-locked dialogue performance.
