It's interesting to me that the one Hitchcock movie from the 1940s that makes your list is this one, since I'd put several of Hitch's other movies from this decade above Paradine. Anyway, if you feel like saying I'd be interested in what made you chose Paradine above the others.

I doubt anyone else will include Last Year at Marienbad (it would be in my long list). Intriguing film with fabulous b & w cinematography.

It is a very novel viewing experience; the combination of the enigmatic storyline, production design, and cinematography make it a film that I've enjoyed every since my first viewing.

Thanks for the interest. “Foreign Correspondent”, “Saboteur” and “Notorious” are all 40’s Hitchcock films I admire. But none ever pulled me in quite as completely as “The Paradine Case” did right from the first time I saw it.
I guess I have a predilection for stories about obsessive love. And this tale of a lawyer’s consuming attachment to his client certainly fits that template. I’d have preferred it if Hitchcock had been able to get his first choice as male lead (Laurence Olivier). Gregory Peck just doesn’t seem sufficiently British.
But every other role in the large ensemble is cast to perfection. Most crucially that of Mrs Paradine herself. Alida Valli exudes a complex allure that makes the idea of being fascinated by her completely believable. Beauty, mystery – a compelling mix of composure, intelligence and passion. Can’t think of another actress who’d have brought the part to life quite so magnificently,
I’m generally not fond of courtroom dramas. But everything that leads this story to its courtroom scenes is beautifully composed and presented. And once there, the various dynamics at play keep interest at a high pitch.
“Paradine”’s cinematography, music, dialogue and all-round atmosphere still captivate me after all these years. That sequence where the attorney silently explores Mrs. Paradine’s empty bedroom, increasingly intoxicated by the signs of her recent presence, remains for me one of the highwater marks in Hitchcock’s entire filmography.
