I used pennies under my spikes (on my hardwoods) when I had my system upstairs in the living room. Yep, a small drill tap on the seed to set the "dimple" hole. Just before I moved to the basement, I switched over to vibrapods under my mains and sub...... and I'll be danged.... things got better (esp the bass and lower mids) with the pods.
Now, it is all mostly room dependent wherever you gear is setup (IMO), but it is worth experimenting with pods with hardwoods if you have the inclination. You may just find a match for your speakers in that space.

and ... yes, Bob, now with my LCR speakers on stands now in the basement... I do use 4 fat beads of Blue Tack between the sand-filled/spiked stands top-plate and the Studio 40 mains and CC. And for my stand mounted surrounds as well. Works well for me.
