Seems like Friedkin himself slammed the door on that nearly two years ago:

But director Friedkin is here to tell you that whatever “Exorcist” reboot or remake is in the cards, he has nothing to do with it. “There’s a rumor on IMDb that I’m involved with a new version of ‘The Exorcist,'” he tweeted this week. “This isn’t a rumor, it’s a flat-out lie. There’s not enough money or motivation in the world to get me to do this.”

Indeed, Friedkin hasn’t been involved with any of the “Exorcist” spinoff films....

There have been so many knock-offs of and bad sequels to The Exorcist that this feels really superfluous at this point. That they're modeling it after the recent Halloween trilogy doesn't inspire a whole lot of confidence either. Will we find Ellen Burstyn living off the grid, having taken up survivalism, when the devil finds her and challenges her to a fiddle competition? Actually, I might pay to see that.

Full footage descript

Exclusive Footage Description: Universal and Blumhouse revealed the first-ever footage from David Gordon Green’s upcoming reimaging of The Exorcist. The film is now titled The Exorcist: Believer, and features the possession of two children. Leslie Odom Jr. plays a father whose daughter and her friend go missing for 3 days in the forest. The two young teenage girls become the victims of possession, getting more facially deformed and monster-like as the days go by. Their makeup design is very similar to what Regan looked like in the original film, with yellow eyes, facial scars, and slime all over their face.

Speaking of Regan, original actress Linda Blair returns in the role as Leslie Odrom Jr. reaches out to her for help. Given her history, Regan could be the key to bringing these girls back. Regan has short gray hair and wears an almost all-white suit. The iconic Exorcist theme kicks in and the two young girls go full demon mode. When Regan comes face to face with Odom Jr.’s daughter, she tells the demon inside her, “We’ve met before,” prompting a sinister smile and laugh from the demon. A montage begins showing more of the film’s horrifying scares, leading up to am at-home exorcism led by Regan in the basement. The two girls are tied together and hooked up to heart monitors, and their two hearts begin to beat in sync in a creepy final shot of them giving monstrous yells.
