Sony STR-DN1030 GUI output question (1 Viewer)

I've searched and read without success. My son wanted the STR-DN1030 for Christmas and today we began set-up. One problem though - it appears that the GUI output is HDMI only. We have yet to see anything on either Component Monitor OUT or Video Monitor OUT using several different standard 480 TVs. Connections confirmed before posting this.
Can anyone confirm or assist. His set-up does not yet include and HDMI monitor/tv and buying one is out of his budget for the moment. This unit may go back if this is not sorted out soon.

Off the top of my head...
I can't think of any AVR at the moment that don't use the HDMI for the menu. I'm sure they exist...but I can't give you any model numbers...by anybody.
