Yesterday I saw an official HBO 2 page ad in one of those video store business magazines. (I think the magazine is call VA Magazine)The two page ad said there would be eight half hour episodes on two DVD's and the retail price would be 49.99 and the MAP (minimum advertised price) would be 39.99. What is up with HBO? Why is season five more expensive than season one?

It's absolutely ridiculous. Let's compare:

S1 12 episodes $39.98 (MSRP)
S2 18 episodes $49.99
S3 18 episodes $49.99
S4 18 episodes $49.99
S5 8 episodes $49.99(!!!!)

The cost per episode for S1-S4 is about $3, so $24 should be the MSRP for S5. Heck, $29.99 or even $34.99 wouldn't upset me.

Season 2 of Coupling UK comes out on Oct. 28 -- 9 episodes, 2 discs, MSRP $34.98 (Amazon's current price is $24.49). I'll stick with this!

Maybe HBO figures that people who are collecting the show will buy S5 regardless of the price!

Perhaps this is an error which will be corrected later. This does seem to be rather steep. I just passed on immediately picking up Family Guy Volume Two because it was priced the same as Volume One which had 4 discs with 28 episodes as opposed to 3 discs with 22 episodes for Season Two. I don't like this trend.
