New prices at the store today. The Sony SCDCE775 5disc SACD player has sold for $349 since it came out before Christmas. Today our "regular" (not sale) price dropped to $199. I guess that means something new is on its way??

But watch out... the early players lacked bass management. (Don't know about this one in particular.)

This is essential for the player to do if you are interested in multichannel SACD and have a subwoofer, unless (1) your receiver does it (rare), or (2) you buy a separate bass management box.

The 775 is not too bad in that respect. At least you can set the speakers to "small" and send the bass to the sub for 5.1 and stereo, although the crossover is a rather-high 120Hz.

Luckily, the price drop is across the board on the Sony SACD players. I bought a 222ES last week, and with the recent drop on the 555ES, I got an upgrade at no additional charge.

Not too shabby.

Wow! I go away on business for a few days and the whole SACD landscape changes. I just went to Crutchfield's web site and saw the 'C222ES for $500 and the 'C555ES for $800. J&R Music World is selling the 'C222ES for $380 and the 'C555ES for $600. Amazing prices. I just bought the 'CE775 from J&R two weeks ago for $200 for my second system and am going to exchange it for the 'C222ES. J&R has a 30-day return policy, so the exchange will be no problem. I just have to wait until tomorrow when my salesman will be in. The 'CE775 is nice for the money, but for another $180, I'll take the better build quality of the 'C222ES, plus the five-year warranty. Whoo-hoo!
David, your insight about the internal differences between the 'CE775 and 'C222ES helped make my decision. Thanks. In the back of my mind, I have been hoping that the price of the 'C222ES would drop so that I could do this upgrade. :emoji_thumbsup: :emoji_thumbsup:
By the way, the price of the 'XA777ES is still $3000 at Crutchfield.

Yes, it was a timely price drop to be sure. Congrats--I enjoyed the 222ES in my main system, so I'm sure you'll enjoy it in your second system.
Now too bad I can't get the 777 for the same price as the 555 in a month.:D

David, thanks. I'm sure I will enjoy the 'C222ES. It's more than I need in the second system, seeing as I have the 'C333ES in there, but $380 is a great price. The build quality of the 'CE775 is a drawback, and that is the main reason I will do the upgrade.

You never know what is going to happen. The 'XA777ES could be $600, in which case the 'C555ES will be $149.95, and the 'CE775 will be $19.95. :D

David, other business trips are in the works, but dates have not been finalized. If you see the price of the 'XA777ES drop, you will know that I am out of town. :)
