Just wanting opinions on the Play Station 2 as a DVD player.

I have been told that it will work fine & it gives the same quality sound/vision as a medium priced DVD player.

Anyone have an opinion on this?

Cheers.

Steve.

I'd say the quality is noticeably worse than even a $50 apex. Artifacts, if they are present, show their ugly faces way more than on the toshiba and apex I've used at home.

If you're serious about using the PS2 as a DVD player (I do for a variety of reasons), you should upgrade to the new PS2+ unit.

It does prog video and has a nearly silent fan, intergrated IR, and latest DVD drivers (not placed on your mem card).

The new remote also allows power off and eject.

As far as PQ goes, I don't have variety of units to test, but I suspect the new unit is very respectable within the under-$200 field (and does many other things to boot).

Getting the Sony Component video cable is given, however.
