how necessary are they. My new yahmaha has every capability, but how much of it do I need to utilize. I have a 6.1 setup now, how much better will it be to fill up the room with two more presence speaker and another rear?

Can’t speak for the rear speaker, as I don’t have one, but if you use the DSp effects, especially the music modes, the front presence speakers make a noticeable improvement.

You can also use them for the dialog lift fuction, which in my opinion makes dialog clearer.
