For much of the first half of the 20th century in horror cinema, zombies were often depicted as the byproduct of voodoo rituals, most memorably so in Victor Halperin’s White Zombie (1932; the first movie to do so), Val Lewton’s production of I Walked with a Zombie (1943) and Hammer Films’ The Plague of the Zombies (1966). However, what constituted a zombie changed dramatically in 1968, when a group of filmmakers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was making a low budget horror movie in between other projects. The end result – Night of the Living Dead – would end up a major turning point in the horror genre in general. Released on home video over the years by numerous companies, Criterion returns to their 2018 Blu-ray release and goes to the next level with UHD Blu-ray.
