Supposedly, they are finishing negotiations and expect an announcement on Friday that Mike Tyson will fight on July 30, 2004.

Tyson has also announced through Sports Radio 810 here locally that his camp will try to register 100,000 voters in Missouri (???) But, that's what he says.

Of course, I'm assuming he, being a convicted felon, will not be one of those registered.

The best thing that ever happened to this city was that clown leaving. Trust me, he will leave a wake of sh*t as he blows through town. Most cities that host Tyson fights never do it again. The crowd he brings out of the woodwork is pretty rough and violent compared to other boxers. As a KC native, I think its cool in a way, but as a realist the whole process most likely will be a nightmare that ends with people feeling ripped off and pissed. Beware of the obligatory brawl.

He obtained a Missouri boxing lic. this week, and was going to fight in the Savvis center in St. Louis.. but they turned him down. Currently, Missouri is the only state he has a licence to fight in.

I don't mean to be rude but... who cares!?
Mike Tyson is a joke. He has really put an ugly spot on the sport of boxing.

Oh, I agree, the guy is a jerk.. but how many people will watch just to see if he loses his mind and does something assinine?

When Tyson was in his prime (80s, under Cus) he was one of the most devestating fighters I have ever seen.. people were scared to get into the ring with him, and I believe a lot of fighters -could- have gotten up but chose to stay the hell down.

Let Don King get hold of you, when you've got a few screws loose to begin with and you're being held together with bailing wire and tape, and you get the kind of results you see in Tyson.

Don King is an ass clown. Tyson was screwed up before he came along yes, my King has taken him for everything he has. But hey if a state is stupid enough to license him... well you get what you ask for. People need to stop fanning the flames with this and turn their backs, like the Simpson's episode, if we just don't pay attention he'll go away :D

not that i feel the least bit bad for him, but it's a shame he is a nut-job. he could have been one of the baddest boxers ever, but he is just a joke now. i feel bad for the city dumb enough to let him box there.

Well, although we say "feel bad for the city that lets him box there" Memphis didn't do too badly last time around, netting tax revenues from tourism that were nice and profitable.

It's just the tarnish of being associated with the boob.

As a KC native I don't want to be too harsh, but if they are thinking this is going to bring in big tourism dollars they really need to recall the city council. Memphis didn't do too badly because he fought Lennox Lewis which brought world wide attention. Nobody gives a rat's ass about a washed up Mike Tyson v. skilless Kevin McBride. I have a hard time fathoming that this fight is going to bring in the celebrity and CEO type crowd that was seen in Memphis that spend the tourism dollars. This is not the same Tyson that fought Lewis. His reputation as a boxer and more importantly, a freakshow is completely finished and there is hardly a soul on earth who would buy his pay per views anymore, let alone travel. If St. Louis said no to this joke of a fight, I don't know why KC would accept it.

*laugh* because Kemper is a dump and is getting a "going away" gift until the new Sprint Center opens downtown in 2007, and we lift some poor town's Hockey or Basketball team from them..

very true. I am really excited about the new arena. That will be awesome for the Big 12 tournament and the (hopeful) revitalization of the city. I have always seen myself moving back there someday so I always root for the city, but I guess I agree that if there was anyplace in the world Tyson should fight it should probably be Kemper. I would buy the fight on pay per view only if it was titled, "Two Chumps in a Dump." :D

Wow, as a Kansas City resident, if Tyson fights here, I'll be the first in line . . .

at the AMC Theater to watch Shrek 2 for the 3rd time.

Shame on Missouri for giving that idiot a license to fight. Hell, it will probably be a fight at one of the casinos. Doesn't Isle of Capri host fights in the summer?

Truthfully, I would rather watch the broadway musical Mamma Mia with my wife than go see Tyson box. And I hate Abba!

Randy:
Not sure about Isle of Capri, but Ameristar hosts a lot of fights. And that's exactly what I was thinking when I first heard about the Tyson fight - I wondered if it would be at Ameristar.

From what I understand it will be in Kemper if it happens, but according to Whitlock's article this morning, it looks like Tyson and Co. will turn down KC.

Oh, my hearts broken. Now I'll miss the customary shots of the local sports figure eating at Gates, or Bryants.

Hey Mike! I think you should try boxing in St. Joe. Not much is going to hurt that town!

Well, since Missouri is the only locale he has a license to box in.. he could try Joplin, and box in the Hammond Center (what a step down ;)

Or, he could go to Branson :)

As much as I really loved to see him fighting in the past, I'm not excited to see him in action anymore. I also believe that a lot of wrong has been done to him. I hope that he's not struggling for money. Some good fortune needs to come to him.
