I'm looking for a small and cheap headphone amp to increase the volume of the sound that comes out of the headphone jack on my Apple iBook. It's fine for a quiet room at near max volume, but on planes and in other loud situations, the sound just gets drowned out by the background noise. I'm ideally looking for something at around $50 or less.

Two thoughts:

1. Danelectro makes a portable headphone amp for $15 new. Its designed as a guitar amp for headphones. I don't know how it sounds.

2. For your stated application, it sounds like you need noise cancelling. Sharper Image has a product, "NoiseBuster", for $50 that should reduce the ambient noise.

Radio Shack actually has one that I've seen good reviews on. $15.00 only. I remember this headphone amp used to be marketed under another name, which escapes me right now.
