Like anything that is big and breaks, get rid of it! I just bought my first RPTV, but if and when it breaks (assuming many years from now when it is not worth fixing) I will put it outside my house during the spring months where the town will take it away.
A very good way to dispose of any old tv that is not working or is in serious need of expensive repair is to check the phone book for charities, like veterans assc. or ARC. They use these as training tools to help teach a trade to someone who might not have the funds or ability to get this training and skills elsewhere. Most will pick-up whenever is convienent for you. Just a suggestion.
