Hello ...

I'm in the US, currently using a modified GE 1101P player for my region-free and Macrovision-free needs. On these two discs (East is East and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me), the widescreen aspect is not properly converted to NTSC. (The entire 16:9 image is squeezed into a 4:3 frame.) If I upgrade to a Malata or JVC, I shouldn't have this problem, since they properly convert PAL to NTSC, correct?

The weird thing is, my widescreen R2 version of Amelie plays flawlessly. Hmmm ...

I know that a lot of Region Free DVD players cannot do both Anamorphic downconversion and PAL->NTSC. It sounds to me like this is the problem you are having.

I'd recommend rather than upgrading the DVD player, upgrade to a widescreen TV!
