For some time I have been meaning to post this link as a reference for those interested in this issue. Cloud marks, or milky swirls visible on DVD media, is a recognized manufacturing defect. Unfortunately, a very common one. However, it does not seem to inhibit playback in consumer machines, based both on my experiences and what I have read here and elsewhere. Also, it has no association with "DVD Rot", which is a delamination issue.

Oops, I misspelled "appearance" in the title. :b

Well, my Moulin Rouge disc 1 had that cloud and I could not play past chapter 14 due to the pixelation and freezing that occured. Took it back, got a replacement (no swirl this time) and it worked fine.
