I had run ethernet cable to the back of my TV in hopes of using "something" to play my MP3s from my computer on the other side of the house. To give it that clean look I used those 6 jack wall plates from HomeDepot and put in an ethernet jack, Coax jack and 4 speaker binding post jacks (for my surrounds on the other side of the living room where there is a 4 jack wall plate for the speakers).
In short I picked up an Audiotron from Yahoo auctions for $100. From reading their forums they are giving hints of coming out with a newer version. It is nice to play your music by selecting either Title, Artist, Album, Genre or List (playlists which you have created). Net lets you play streaming radio stations off the internet (PC doesn't have to be powered on for this). Nice thing about this is it plays Icecast, Shoutcast and WMP streams so you can add any Shoutcast radio station you want.
I have about 3500 mp3's so I do have a bit of work to do in fixing ID3 tags and also creating playlists.
Again, the quality of playback will only be as good as the quality of the rip. So garbage in garbage out. I rip at 192k or higher.
For what it does and the price its a great little machine. No worrys about having a HD in the unit, plus this way, all your music files are centrally stored and easier to maintain.
