Not at all. The 3806 is quite a capable receiver. Improvements or lack there of depend on a lot of variables. In my case I was testing out a RF7 system set to large, bass to mains, no sub. In this scenario all 3 of the receivers I auditioned did not sound as good as when a B&K amp was added. Not just Denon, but the Pioneer and Yamaha also. In this case highs, mids, and low bass were greatly improved with the amp. And that's not to say the 7 system sounded bad with just the receivers. Just that in this case it sounded better. Enough so that I thought it justified the expense of the amp.
In a different set up with different speakers the outcome will be totally different. It's up to everyone's ears to decide what they think sounds best.
I do stand by saying that a receiver does not have a big enough power supply to handle 2 ohm loads without clipping or shutting down.
