I know you won't go back to Commercial Electronics (sadly, I've had a similar experience with some of their sales staff), but they do carry PSB subwoofers and can probably access the rest of the speaker line as well. As far as other PSB dealers go, it's out of your way but Soundforme in Langley...
Whew, what a lot of work! :) Thanks for your contribution! Perhaps you could answer a question for me. There's something that I don't understand about the graphs of Harmonic Distortion % by Component. How is it possible that, in I think all the tests I've read so far, the second (and...
Thank you! The camera does indeed change focus, which is accompanied by a slight vertical compression. The explanation with the anamorphic lens makes sense to me.
Hi all, I have a question about an older release (which is new to me though!): If any of you have this (the anamorphic version of the DVD), can you tell me what I'm seeing at 55:13? This is the scene where an admiral and a captain are asking Ryan about what he thinks Ramius is planning to do...
Hello, This information is not readily apparent at the SVS site; does anyone know which models of SVS's subwoofers have high-pass filtering for the mains? I ask because I'm wondering at their suitability for applications where no external crossover is used (i.e. an integrated stereo amp...
Puneet, Dean is right -- listening will give you the best information as to how to proceed. If you can get some demo speakers into your home, that will help immensely. I don't know how things work at your stores, but some places will let you take home a demo pair of speakers under certain...
I think Mr. Weitz has a good idea. If your PC is nearby, you can hook up a tone generator to your system to get the system response at specific frequencies. You can also use other software, like the free demo of ETF for example, to do quick plots of your overall response. You can also, if...
Tom, Just out of curiosity, have you tried the subwoofer crossover test in the THX optimizer that comes on the Star Wars disc? It should give you a good sense of what the sub's doing from 200 Hz down to 20 Hz. Ken
I was curious, so I checked. It was right here: http://mcm.newark.com/NewarkWebComme...SKU=80-430&N=0 and was selling for $89.95! (No Ginsu knives included though, as far as I could tell.)
Andrew, Here's a thread on Audio Asylum about this issue: db(.)audioasylum(.)com/cgi/t.mpl?f=speakers&m=64948 (Remove parentheses to make the link work.) Per my own experience, I have a wonderful daughter (now 3 1/2) who is very compliant. The gear is on a high rack at my eye level...
This is a bit of a "noise" message in comparison to the above "signal" messages, but here is a cool subwoofer kit even though it's not currently available for shipping: http://www.creativesound.ca/details....l=EZTUBESHIVAP The assembly manual gives some SPL and THD measurements.
Hi! Check out the following link for a huge glossary of subjective (and arguably some objective) audio terms, including the terms "bright" and "warm". www(.)integracoustics(.)com/MUG/MUG/bbs/stereophile_audio-glossary.html
Donald, I hope that whatever you decide, you end up happy! By the way, here's a link to a page containing a cool Excel tool; it models how speaker performance is affected by the dimensions of a room and the reflectivity/absorptivity of its surfaces. It's easy and fun to use; I'd recommend...
Actually, the reverse is true; one of the reasons to go to a *ported* enclosure is to get more low frequency extension. Sealed subs may roll off at higher frequencies. However, in a small room, room gain will start to affect the in-room response of the sub at higher frequencies than would be the...
Have you heard of the Acoustic Visions MRS-10? It's a 13.75" inch plus short legs. Our very own Ed Mullen reviewed it and gives measurements and analysis at: www(.)hometheaterhifi(.)com/volume_11_4/acoustic-visions-mrs-10-subwoofer-11-2004.html
Hello all, Here's the specs on Meniscus Audio's SW-1084 10" subwoofer driver: SW-1084 Fs: 20 Qts: 0.36 Vas: 84.0 Xmax: 16.0 SPL: 87.0 Under recommended enclosure size, they indicate "20S-45V" liters. However, just messing around with the ported.xls spreadsheet from the...
Matt, Try ETF (you can Google it -- I can't post URLs yet). The free demo can do a pretty good job of graphing low frequency response, using a 5 second noise burst or frequency sweep. Saves a lot of time vs. playing individual tones and marking down SPL meter measurements. Check it out!
Hi!
It's interesting how setup can affect measurements, though; I did some searching, and on a Canadian audio mag's web site there is a review that was done a few years ago, involving a PDR-10. With their setup, the PDR-10 measured +/-1 dB (at 89 dB) from 20 to 90 Hz. There is no mention of THD...
Hello all, I hope everyone here had a good Christmas! I added some posts to this thread on Christmas Eve, and I'm impressed at the number of posts that have been added since! Since this thread has already digressed a couple of times, I'll add yet another digression here! :) Over at...
Yes, there will be notable room gain -- the question is would it compensate sufficiently for the 6i's roll-off behaviour (which is still unknown at this point). I would find it very educational if James could post some measurements, if he has the means to do so at his disposal! PS: Is the...
Yes, these discussions sometimes end up being like "religious wars". I've been online for many years, and the one thing that hasn't seemed to change over time seems to be the ease with which flame wars start. Ah well, I try to be civil, considerate, and I also try to read my posts from the...
Do you know if there is an accepted definition for "nearfield"? I have seen anything from 1" in front of the driver to 1 meter in front of the driver used. Reading Ed's review again, I see that he measured the SVS 3 feet from the depth midpoint, which would place the mic around 2 feet from the...
I don't think he published this figure at all, though he might be willing to share it if you contacted him directly. I think it would be safe to say the 20 Hz measurement would be down significantly; again, PSB's web site indicates the 6i measures -10 dB at 26 Hz. In their words, the sub has...
Interesting! I find it fascinating that there are so many ways to compare subwoofers numerically. Each measurement plays a different role in the overall impression of the sub's performance, and the sum effect of the different measurements results in what we hear with different material...
