Consensus seems to be that it is too soon to buy 4k TVs.
More details on the set up? Will the TVs be wall mounted or stand alone? Where will equipment be relative to TVs, and will they be in built-ins or housed in to be placed furniture?
If you know where the speakers (and subwoofer?) will...
Forbes, of Forbes Magazine fame, says to wait for the 2015 model 4k TVs because:
High Dynamic Range
Expanded Quantum Color Technology
10-bit LCD panels
4k Blu-ray specs - HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2

Thanks for the info. Sounds like the Bose guys know their stuff.
I chatted with the folks at Yamaha and they didn't have much to offer beyond it "might run hotter or shut off" if I used 4 ohms all around. (They also said Yamaha doesn't have any receivers that do 4 ohms all the way around.) I...
Vipin, welcome to HTF.
Al and Sam are spot on - if you are looking for a music system, invest most of your money in good speakers. You will likely have them longer than your first receiver, and listen to a variety using the music that you enjoy most. It might be worth looking into prior year...
I'm upgrading the HT equipment to go with the new Samsung plasma TV. Looks like I goofed by jumping on an Amazon deal for a Yamaha RX-V675 ($350). (The old H/K AVR 525 doesn't do HDMI and was getting quirky.) Going to set up the new Yamaha, I (re)discovered that the speakers are 4-ohms. The...
I got my 525 on ebay through the HK store. They are refurbs and come with factory warranty. Haven't checked in a while, but they were putting one up for auction every day. Track them for a while and see what they generally go for. You will find they get pretty warm...
My HT set up includes a 48-in Mitsubishi HDTV, an H/K 525 AVR, and a Sony progressive scan DVD. The room is arranged so that the AVR and DVD are in a cabinet behind the seating position. I'd like to put in "something" that will allow me to control the cabinet stuff without having to turn and...
Tom, I just got a refurbished 525 from the H/K ebay store. If you're patient, you can get one for close to/under $500 at auction. (Also the CC in Timonium still had a floor model a few weeks ago, but it was closer to $550). Based on the posts here, the 525 has had its share of difficulties...
Terry, I recently got the Totem Dreamcatcher system, after demoing B&Ws, Energys, and Bostons. The ssytem includes 4 identical main bookshelf monitors, a centre channel, and a subwoofer. I opted out of their sub in favor a (an?) HSU STF2. Still in setup mode, so I can't say how things have...
Burt, sounds like we are putting together similar systems about the same time. I just ebayed a HK 525. Did you get an owners manual with your system? If not, you can find them on HKs website. It looks like the binding posts can either take the speaker wire directly, or you can use banana clips...
Bryan, I'll take a swag (and give you a bump). This is a blind swag, as I haven't heard the Onkyo system (though I'm a bit of a fan). I'd say start with a sub. From the traffic here, I'd say it's 1) svs, 2) hsu. I just got an hsu at CompUSA for $350, can't wait to hook it up. Fronts and...
Jamie, nice post - one of the better ones I've seen recently by folks putting together a new system. Must be pretty satisfying to have done the research, the work, and now you get to enjoy! Let us know when the upgrade bug hits...;)
Tony, I'm researching too. Haven't looked at Marantz, but for the Yamaha you can probably go for the 1400 without losing much, and save a couple hundred bucks (which from the sense I get hear, you should put into a better sub)!
I second jason's suggestion. Haven't heard the omnisats, but I've been impressed by the Mirage products I've heard. With an svs sub, a "hidden" satelitte system ought to sound great and will save you from moving speakers around. Sorry I can't make the Frisco Demo Party, too far from the...
James, glad to hear things are looking well for you. Hope you took that special bride of yours out for a special Valentine's celebration. :emoji_thumbsup:
Russell, I'm new at this too, but you seem off to a great start. Some rules of thumb I've seen floating around: 1)budget 10% for wiring ($100) 2)spend twice on your speakers ($600) as you do your receiver ($300). But then rules are made to be broken:D . Since your room is not too big...
Evan, thanks, I agree with everything you said about the Yamaha - the 1400 looks terrific, but nosing around I see the H/K 325 can be had for less than $400, a big enough savings over the 1400 to give me pause. I demo'd the 1400 with several speakers, and liked the B&W line (603 mains) and...
interesting to see what others say about a larger than usual distance between the mains. I would be concerned about the "fifth" pole being directly between the between-windows location and the main listening area. Another option would be to put the right main on that fifth pole (nearest the tv)...
thanks for the input. Budget: a little hard to say. I priced out a system with a Yamaha 1400 and B&W speakers - 603 fronts, the lcr60 center, and vm1 surrouds. I really like everything about this set up, but kind of choked on the $2600+ number. That led me to the H/K refurb. Less than $400...
Thanks Drew (and Colin). Hoping to narrow down the options a little. Easy to hear Boston Acoustics, DefTech, B&W, Mirage, Polk. Klipsch, and Infinity are difficult ( to big box stores!), Paradigm and many others would require a bit of travel.
yes, a nice brain teaser. My first thought was that it might be easier to "speaker" if the Tv were on the other side of the fireplace - looks like the right main would be stuck out in the middle of the room when the tv is stored. Might look at some of the narrow "mains" you see pictured with...
building a new HT, and like the value of the refurb HK 325. What are good (or poor) speaker choices to match? Small room (15x11), probably 1/3 music, 2/3 HT. Thanks!
Simon, Evan, Jesse, cabreau, thanks for all the good input on Bostons :emoji_thumbsup: I'm heading in that direction - what receivers do you find work well with the Bostons? I'm looking at a referb HK325 or a new yamaha 1400...
Burt, I'm looking at this receiver too, seems a good deal for what you get - only a year old. Let us know how you like it once you get it set up. You might ask your speaker question in the speaker forum - what do you have for mains?
With not too much digging, here are the Home Theatre magazine test results: Yamaha RX-V2400 (January 2004) "Highlights - Seven channels of 120-watt joy—and no cheating " "...the RX-V2400's left channel, from CD input to speaker output with two channels driving 8-ohm loads, reaches 0.1%...
I recently demo'd Bostons VR1s on Yamaha 1400 and Denon 1803 - not an equal comparison, but that's what tweeter had hooked up. I thought the Yamaha matched very nicely with these speakers - esp rich detail in the midrange. The Denon was warmer (of course) and noticably less full, but I (and...
