I tend to agree, on a decent HT setup, a lot of metal albums end up sounding somewhat lifeless. I'd point some of the blame to bad production, but it may be in the nature of the music itself in some cases.
When I first got my system, I had the sub cranked also. While its nice to "feel" every...
I agree with pretty much everything here..... When I first got my HT system, I distinctly remember being doubtful that a 100 x 5 reciever, and 12" sub with 100 watts feeding it would be overkill. When it comes down to it, having a ton of wattage and sub capability is a great thing, as long...
hmm....I went out and rented Monsters Inc last night, and really dont see what the fuss is. I guess that is testament to how SVS subs perform (I use a HTD 12" ported sub).
Frankly, if you havent seen it, rent LOTR, and watch for when Sauron is destroyed in the first 10 minutes of the movie...
1 and 2 dont really enter into the quality of a sub per se. Any decent sub will have controls for both.
#3: a loose definition would be a sub that can accurately and musically handle everything thrown at it, be it explosions on a movie, or music passages. This is many things to many different...
having purchased my budget minded system about 6 months ago (sony str de-675 reciever, HTD level 3 speaker system), I was initially pleased with my purchase.
The living room I was using (12 x 13) was a very bright room, a good amount of windows, and hardwood flooring. We'll get back to this...
I can only surmise what happens from my own experience. If I go to a decent book store, and want to buy a book, I can sit down, and maybe read a few dozen pages, or whatever to decide if its something I would like. With MP3's, I can do likewise. For example, I had never heard any music by...
do you own the house you're currently living in? Im pretty much in the same boat, having started with a small system, and quickly realizing that it just doesnt cut it. The more I've been reading, the more I'm leaning towards the point of NOT upgrading my speakers until I own my own home...
I would imagine that most people that get hit with upgrade-itis are very similiar to me.... people that spend a relatively low amount of money on thier system (roughly 1200 w/o the cost of the TV), then discovered how much better things can be.
In other words, I can certainly envision myself...
the one (and only, as far as I know) high end shop in my area was extremely polite and helpful on my first visit. I explained my situation to the salesman, telling him right off the bat I had no intention of buying anything that day, just looking at what was offered. He was polite as...
Im assuming they are for sealed enclosures.. what benefits do they offer? Drawbacks? Also, where can I get some beginner info on the specs you guys always toss around for cabinets and such? Thanks!
on the second track, at fairly high volume, I'm getting this wickedly low thump that I can only think is the mic picking up one of them tapping thier feet.... Anyone else get this? I'm just curious.
the majority of MP3's I see available for download are at 128 bit rate. IMO, this is unacceptable for keeper material.. but it works fine for me. I do download MP3's. I check out artists that I am not familiar with, and if I like what I hear, I go buy a disc, and remove the MP3's from my...
hmm... I'm actually not a huge fan of Disturbed (I tend to think they rip themselves off, Sevendust is really guilty of this also), but damn does Prayer have one of the tastiest guitar riffs I've heard in quite some time. I'll wait to hear more of the disc before I pick it up. Tool is damn...
well, we all at least agree how bad-ass she is in concert! I can completly see how she may dismiss her older work.... she's grown a bit since then, so looking back on it makes it seem very underdeveloped from her point of view. I love the stuff she's been doing with her band, I think they add...
I've had a fairly good system in an older car of mine (ADS amps/sub, Clif Designs front seperates), and while car can be very clean and loud, you have many hurdles naturally in a car, some of which are a)road noise, and b)poor seating position....
To my ears at least, music in my even modest...
I'm assuming that this is a foolish question, but how does this combo stack up against a) other recievers in the same price range, and b) other combo's in the same price range?

definitly music. my sub level is definitly set to not be in your face, but it adds a missing presence to music. I could far easier watch movies without it rather than music (though I certainly never do).
I do think my sub is better for movies though. It lacks a bit of detail.
Listening to...
threads like this are always interesting to me.... I tend to be what some people would call "close minded" when it comes to music, but in all actuality, growing up trying to be a musician, being in bands that write/perform all thier own work, and DO thier own footwork tends to change your...
i'll be trying this at home for sure. Looking at true bi-wireing cable prices though, and the length's I need to run (diagonally across a 12 x13 room) make them out of the question at the moment financially.
I'll do Chu's test, and post the results as soon as I can :)
hmm... how good is that live disc of hers anyway? When I had checked on it, it was only available from the Quinlan Road site, and not in stores. And Jack Briggs, seeing her marketed to a broader audience, if you appreciate the style and sound she has now, is exactly what needs NOT to happen...
oh hell yes.
Just please tell me that its Tori, and not her trying to get popular. Let me explain...
"Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" is by far one of the best albums Sarah McLachlan ever recorded..... "Surfacing" on the other hand seems so damn commercial, it makes me queasy. One of the things I...
Martice, thanks for the advice. Yes, those are the model of speaker I have, although mine are last years model (the port is round and fires towards the back). As for the sub, I am also using the 12" htd listed on the same site. I did listen to a few sets of speakers before purchasing...
well, I'll give a semi-quick rundown.
I am using the Home Theater Direct level 3 system, shown here:

These are running through a Sony DE-675 reciever that I am admittedly less than please with (I plan replacement of this ASAP). As far as controls...
