I just got a RX-V477 and have a question. My old receiver, which was audio only - no video switching, I was using optical audio straight from the TV. With my sub on "auto", it would click on when it detected a low frequency signal, as it should. With the 477, using HDMI for audio, the sub is not detecting the low frequency, and is not clicking on. I have to leave the sub "on" the on position for it to work. Is this some quirk with HDMI audio? Should I just leave the sub "on" all the time, which I really don't want to do. Being new to these video switching receivers, can I use HDMI for the video and optical for the audio and see if that will activate the sub?

Plus, my sub instructions say to set the crossover to max on the sub when using the sub pre-out on the receiver. Is that the correct way to set the crossover? I have it set at 120hz in the receiver settings.

Thanks....

I don't turn my subs off. Nor any of the ancillary amps.

Yes, you turn the sub crossover all the way up...the AVR has control, so keep the knob "out of the way".

Hello,

Not sure if you got this straight yet but I have a 477 with a Klipsch SW-350 Powered sub. I have my sub set to auto and it works flawlessly. I honestly do not know what HDMI or optical audio has to do with the sub though but I am willing to learn :)

I have the Sub cable (looks like an RCA type cable) coming out of the pre out of the 477 and into the LFE in on the sub. The crossover is turned to max and in the receiver, in the speaker config, I set the crossover to 80hz. Also in the speaker config, with the output setting for the sub, it was initially set to -10 (After YPAO) so I set it to around zero. I set the Sub volume to half.

This seems to work well for me. If you still have the problem let me know.. Glad to help if I can..

I hate to revive a thread, but I found it by googling my issue.

We just moved - had an old Yamaha receiver with an optical in from old TV powering surround and Definitive SC4000. No problems. We move, I upgrade.

New Sony LED and New RXV477. Same SC4000. I have spent the past hour trying to figure out what is going on. After loads of troubleshooting (including plugging it in to old amp) I have determined the following.

Sub will work on the RXV477 (plugged in LFE port and sub pre out on amp) when I have the RADIO on or when I do test tones. It will not play at all when I "watch TV". As we just moved, I don't have anything else set up and am actually currently running a 3.1 set up with front L R and Center and the sub.

I have DirecTV to Yamaha via HDMI and HDMI to TV for picture. I have speaker wire to speakers and sub RCA cable from amp to sub.

I did note some of the preset sound stage things don't actually show the SW in the pre-view window thing on the right. I have made sure to switch to a pre-set sound field that includes a sub. I feel like I have to be missing something.

Any help?

further testing - when I push the "music" button on the remove it witches to 5 channel stereo and the sub works fine in TV mode. When I use the other more traditional move soundstages, I don't get the sub - even when it is illuminated in the right hand side of the display.

I will try and hook up a bluray player tomorrow and see if it has the same issue. I am so very confused.

Are the front three speakers set to small?

What's the input signal when you don't hear the sub? (Option, Signal Info, p. 74 of your manual.) I.e. Dolby Digital 5.1? DTS? What sound mode are you using? (I would use STRAIGHT, p. 44.)

I had a similar problem that the sub would not turn on when I used Airplay as a program source. I spoke today with Yamaha technical support. They recommended that on the setup screen the other speakers should be set to "Small". Doing so enables the subwoofer output. The solution worked for me immediately.

What is the number for Yamaha technical support? I have a Yamaha RX-V793 and the audio level flutters up and down with static whether I'm listening through headphones or speakers. And it isn't tied to any input in back, which I've all sprayed with electronic contact cleaner. At times its steady, but then will cut in at higher volume. Tried spraying under the volume control, as well.

No repair shops locally work on these anymore, and I don't think I'd want to sink a bunch of money into this receiver since I only use it for my turntable and CD recorder, but if anyone has an idea how to stabilize the audio level from fluctuating, I'd appreciate it.
