What are your overall goals for right now and possible future plans?

I like both Rotel, Marantz, Denon, Integra and Yamaha and Pioneer Elite. I would do as much listening to different brand receivers and check out how they perform.

Do you plan to entertain the idea of Dolby Atmos or DTS-X object based surround sound format?

Do you plan to get an 4k/UHD tv in the next 3-4 years?

The key is to get something that will do more than you need and have more inputs that includes the newest standards so that you do not have to buy a replacement for 8-10 years if your lucky. If your looking to purchase a (4K) UHD TV soon or if you have one and plan to buy an (4K) UHD bluray player then personally I would hold off on buying a ht receiver till the specs on the UHD bluray player have been settled and compatible hdmi/hdcp is included in the new models of recievers. I you do not think you will ever get (4K) UHD content you could check out a number of recievers that are currently out if 1080p HD is the furthest you will go video wise. Personally I would wait and get the capability even if you do not plan to use it right now. The thing is you could change your mind and then what, then you have to turn around and spend even more money when you could have spent about the same amount and had it the first time. You need to decide right out of the gate how important is video quality, how important is audio quality and build quality? Not all video paths on recievers are equal, not all amplifier sections are equal and not all room correction, d/a converters are equal etc as you move up in large chunks up the price range. In many cases there is a good reason why a low end receiver is way cheaper than a upper mid range or flagship model! Ask lots of questions and research as much as possible but in the end you need to listen to it put your hands on it and see if you like the features, are they easy to navigate, how does the knobs and buttons feel? Will it properly power the speakers you have if you are keeping them, make sure you do not under power your speakers!

So what are your over all goals?

Going 4K UHD?

Do you want to use it to play music in other rooms from the same receiver?

Do you want to stream music from your laptop and or pc?

Do you want to have the capability to play back Dolby Atmos? or DTS version which is said to be called DTS-X?

Are you looking for a simple system that does the job or are you looking for a system that delivers performance and gives you the best performance you can afford without going all out crazy high end super system?

I have been into audio/video for a long time and while I can say I have sacrificed and saved for many of the upgrades or just been in the right place at the right time. I can speak from experience when I say that patients and research can help you avoid disappointment and help you be happier with your investment longer.

Personally I am looking to go full 4K UHD but my upgrade and or evolution will be done one thing at a time. I currently have a 55" Samsung UHD TV which has a external one connect box that hoses the HDMI and USB ports so it can be upgraded to a newer chipset giving me newer HDMI/HDCP capability. My Pioneer Elite SC-05 will eventually get upgraded to a Marantz, Denon or Rotel and maybe even a Yamaha or Integra depends on what models are available that fit my needs the best. Dolby Atmos and DTS-X are a must in my honest opinion as is a receiver that can handle 3D which my SC-05 does do.

I am not looking to upgrade the TV at this point. I fell like I'm missing sound definition so I wanted to focus on that area first.

By the way I love the sound of those Altec "Voice of the Theater" Speakers in the back ground.

Emotiva makes some nice amps for the money, I am considering one or two of these for my system.
