AirPlay interruptions (1 Viewer)

Setting up a new receiver (Yamaha RX-A740) and most everything is working well but occasionally and out of the blue, when watching tv, AirPlay will pop up and I have to grab the remote and shoot it back to what I was doing before. I'm wondering if someone in the neighborhood might be latching on to it (in error) and maybe I neeed a PIN or something to stop that? Or might there be other potential setup issues?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, all!

Not sure what could be causing that except maybe some kind of a notification.. Not even sure if Airplay has a notification option. I only use Airplay when I am actually listening to music from my PC via itunes.. Otherwise the program is closed so I never see what you are seeing.

Maybe a connection issue where the connection drops and when it re-connects airplay shows it has re-connected?

I have a RX-V477 and I did not have to do any airplay setup at all in the receiver. I just installed itunes and went from there. When I click the song to play I see the airplay menu show up on the tv.

Hope this helps..

Hi Timmy, and thanks for the response...

I don't recall seeing anything regarding a notification so I'm not aware of one either. I use AirPlay to connect to my iPhone and Mac for music (and it's great for that) but nothing beyond that. The RX-A740 has an onscreen programming mode which includes the AirPlay menu and that's what pops up on screen, like I'm trying to use AirPlay (which I'm not). That's why I was wondering if maybe a neighbor is somehow connecting to it and I have to put a PIN or some line of security in place to stop it but that's just a wild guess.

Maybe a connection issue where the connection drops and when it re-connects airplay shows it has re-connected?

Possible. Not sure how I would test that.

I've emailed Yamaha to see if they can give me any assistance but haven't heard back from anyone yet. If I do and can resolve the issue, I'll post it here just in case anyone else has the same question down the road.

Is it possible your Mac or iphone is sending Airplay a handshake of some sort..maybe you received something on your Mac or iphone from apple via itunes and it is causing that menu to pop up occasionally.

I have only had one issue with Airplay where during a song, I would get random 3-5 second song pauses. There was no consistency to the pauses at all. After about 2 weeks of off and on troubleshooting, all I had to do was unplug and plug back in the two (AC outlet) Plug in ethernet devices and it went away. When it does return I just do that and it fixes it every time.

I am sure Yamaha can provide some assistance.. Hope you get it figured out.

I would imagine that is possible but, again, not sure how to test or resolve that. I hope that Yamaha gets back with some ideas as it is a real annoyance to be watching or listening to something and then have everything just stop and have the AirPlay menu pop up.

Thanks for the discussion though - some good ideas on potential issues.

One thought for now until Yamaha gets back with you.. try shutting down Itunes on the Mac and the iphone. See if the interruptions persist or stop.. Atleast that will or will not narrow it down to those two devices.. If you make progress there, run itunes on one device at a time to see if it is one or both devices causing this..

Again hope you get it resolved..

That's a good idea, Tim. I want to say that if I was watching tv (or listening to the radio or whatever), iTunes on my phone and the mac would more than likely both be off but it's possible that that's not always true. I'll pay a little more attention to that in the next few days and see if I can confirm that's true or not.

Thinking out loud here but I think I'm going to hit up the Apple Support group and see if there's anyone over there who's run across this issue as well...

More to come...

Just to finish this up, close it and leave it in the archives for other newbies, and after talking with Yamaha and Apple support groups, it seems like the most pointed to culprit is the iMac which wants to intermittently connect (as Tim was guessing earlier). Not exactly sure how to close that off but now that we know what is the most likely suspect, we'll be going through a handful of routines to see if we can stop the interruptions.

Thanks all!

Now on to the next challenge (connecting a Droid to the receiver wi-fi but that will be a new thread)...
