This is an intermittent problem and has been going on for quiet a while now and I cannot figure it out. This only started after getting a Yamaha
RX-V477 receiver and running everything through that. This never happened when I ran the cable box directly to the TV (HDMI).

I google searched the cable box assuming that might be the problem but had no luck. I had an old Motorola N200 (I think) something cable box.

I recently upgraded to the comcast X1 platform and I assumed that an extra added bonus to this would be that problem going away.
Both cable boxes (old and new) were/are on 24/7 where the rcvr and tv are off when we are not watching TV.

After the upgrade, everything worked great and did not see this problem for the first week or so then it started again. Before with the old cable box it would sometimes clear if I powered down the cable box from the on/off switch and then power down the receiver and wait about a minute then power on the cable box and receiver. That was about 70% reliable. If it did not work I would pull the power cord from the cable box, let it reboot and that would fix it 100% of the time. For the new X1, powering down via the power buttons did not work. Pulling the power cord and rebooting fixed it.

Being that this has happened on the old cable box and continues to happen on the new X1 box, I am inclined to believe it has something to do with the receiver.

I looked throught the receiver settings and did not see any setting that made me thing it might even remotely fix this issue.

Has anyone seen this before and could possibly lend a solution.. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks

What did the 377 replace?Did you hot swap in, or turn everything off...and unplug everything from the wall?
Hi ..

The 477 replaced an old (1989) Technics receiver.. I had the cable box going directly into the TV prior to the 477.

We had everything off when we first got the receiver and everything that was attached to the receiver was off and unplugged because we moved the
Entertainment stand.

It doesn't happen every time but rather 2-3 times a week at it's worst.

It does sound like a handshake issue. Which do you turn on first - the TV or the Receiver?
We have a Harmony remote that turns on/off the TV and receiver at the same time. This problem existed before we bought the Harmony remote though. About 70% of the time (With the old cable box) if I turned off the cable box and then the receiver for about a minute and then turn the cable box on then the receiver it would fix this problem.

Power clearing the cable box fixes it 100% of the time just to have it happen again later.

Appreciate the replies..

This only happens when it is first turned on?Or happens when changing channels and/or commercials?

Only when first turned on.. whether it is first thing in the am or returning home (same day) after being away for awhile but mostly in the morning when we first turn everything on.

That AVR has no upscaling, so that isn't it...Is your STB set for native resolution...or have you set it fixed(fixed meaning 720P, 1080i)?If native...try fixed.(I have my Directv set native and it can take a bit while the box, TV and AVR talk it over deciphering the resolution. Meaning if I go from one resolution to another...or even commercials going 720 to 480, a blank screen is common)

I am pretty sure it is fixed 1080i as I watched the installer set it up. I will check and if native I will change it when I get home and reply back with the results..

Thanks again for all the replies..

Well I went into the device settings and under video display it had 2 options. One for Zoom and one for output resolution.. The resolution part was blank.. no options..

I have a SHARP 70" LED backlit Aquos TV.

Not sure where to go from here.

I don't think anybody using an AVR has "instant picture" on a cable/sat STB.You have three devices (explained this in another thread since Monday) figuring out resolution. If the cable box has to wake up and figure out 720P, 1080i or 480i/P...then the TV and AVR have to wait for that info...then they set themselves...then you get a picture. You haven't said..."the picture/sound never shows up" or if it takes "20 seconds, but it is annoying"...I know that AVR doesn't have HDMI upconversion, but you could try component video to the AVR and TV.If that always works, but HDMI is flaky...then it is nothing but handshake. Welcome to HDMI.

Ok that makes sense..

The problem is that intermittently when I turn on the Rcvr and TV (STB always on), I get no sound and no video so yes the picture and sound never show up
when this issue occurs. I have waited up to 10 minutes before power clearing the STB..

Most of the time there is no problem when turning rcvr/tv on.

Would there be a significant degradation in picture quality going from HDMI to Component?.

Again really appreciate all the help :)

I would try for a while turning on the receiver first and waiting a few seconds for it to "settle in" then try turning on the TV. Do this manually if you have to since your Harmony is already configured with a macro.

My main system is set up similarly - my STB is always on. I power on the receiver first, then the projector.

Before I got the harmony, I would turn on the receiver first and would get sound within 3-5 seconds. Then I would turn on the TV. The problem intermittently shows up either way. Doesn't seem to matter.. There is no ryme or reason to when this happens.

Thanks for the reply...

Was poking around the STB settings and noticed the video resolution setting is set at 1080i 16:9 where before there were no settings..Guess I just didn't wait long enough.

Will check out the Component next..

Technically there is no quality difference component to HDMI. Just component isn't allowed to carry 1080P.Quite often though the video conversion(digital to analog) results in a more intense coloration with a more "flat" look.But...as Jason alluded...have you tried leaving the STB on?I don't turn mine off either. One of my older Directv HD-DVR flakes out if I turn it on while it is recording.(One of my theatres has a ChromeCast and a Netgear NTV300SL. Neither of those gets turned off either. Not sure if CC even has an off)

Yes the STB nevers gets turned off.. it is on 24/7. We use to turn it off with the receiver/TV but when we powered it back on it would take about 3-4 days to get the
guide to update completely (Well the old STB anyway). the new X1 guide loads in no time so power clearing it is not an issue anymore.

Thanks again for the info..
