I have a Sony BDP-S570 purchased in mid 2010 I think. Works fine, seems a little slow to load some discs even with 'quick start' enabled.I have it connected to the AVR via HDMI cable.

From what I've gathered so far, most people would only suggest buying a new more expensive player in regard to it's ability to upscale DVDs in a more pretty way.I don't really watch DVDs, and on the rare occasion that i do, I'm just expecting the picture to look like a DVD and am tolerant of how it looks through my current BD player. Are there any other considerations I may want to take a look at? Or should I just stick with what I have since it seems to be adequate?

My advice.

If you ever upgrade your blu-ray player, make sure to go region-free. You can buy them at www.bombayelectronics.com or www.220-electronics.com

Someday, there might be a movie you want that isn't available in your region. A region-free player will give you peace of mind if that moment ever comes.

As far as DVD upscaling goes, try going to a store and see how an upscaling player looks. Bring your dvd's and ask the sales clerk if you can test out a player.

What was a consideration for me was the type of discs my player played. I used to have two separate machines hooked up to my system (one for Blu-ray discs and a DVD player which could play high-rez audio discs--SACD/DVD-A/etc.).

I found one machine to play them all and have been thrilled at the convenience.

I'm not sure about your model, but I've had older first and second generation Panasonic players and the load times on those were really slow. That drove me crazy for awhile...but OTOH they are still in use as I have handed them down to my kids and they are still going strong. I think it is generally true that newer players load discs faster.

Thanks both of you. I may have to look into one of those region-free players, but thus far the only things I watch are all Region A. The main reason I asked is that I was debating buying a Samsung player to replace my Sony, since the TV is a Samsung also and their HDMI-CEC functions kind of screwy. If I turn the blu-ray player on the TV will come on also, but if I then turn the player off the TV just says "Disconnecting Anynet+ device" and switches to Coax input for some reason (never had anything hooked up to coax).But... if they are both on and I turn the TV off, the player turns off also.Strange, eh? I was thinking perhaps if I had a Samsung player, both would turn on/off together. But... if there are not any quality-related differences maybe I should just stick withe the Sony I already have that works fine, albeit loads some movies slowly.
