I am very surprised that we have not seen S3 for Knots Landing as it was a great night time soap. There were rumors that Knots Landing S3 was stalled due to music rights, but nothing has been said lately to confirmed or denied that is the issue for S3.

I am watching S2 as it was a very good season, especially near the end with what happen to Sid Fairgate. It is too bad Sid's character was removed so early in the season as I felt his character added something to the show.

Knots Landing is sentimental to me as it was the error that I moved from 10-11 years old to my early 20s as such I connected with the characters and the plots as it represented some of the issues I seen as a kid or teenager.

I recently picked up the season 1 and 2 sets. My interest was watching the Dallas crossover episodes.

I've been finding the first two seasons of Knots Landing somewhat "slow going" to watch. So I ended up mostly watching the JR episodes, and the ones with Lucy and Kristin. They seem to have a completely different feel than Dallas.

At this point, I am hoping Warner Brothers is considering releasing a "Complete Series" of "Knots Landing"......I don't think I can wait for a "season by season" set.....there are 14 seasons....and they have been releasing the season sets by YEARS instead of MONTHS......So at this point, I hope they will release a "Completes Series". Especially, since both "Dallas" and "Dynasty" have now been completed. It's "Knots Landing" (and for that matter.....another '80's prime time soap, "Falcon Crest") turn to get completed!!!!

IMO, seasons 4-10 were the best. However, Lisa Hartman sang a lot of '80's pop tunes in seasons 4-6, so I do think this maybe still a problem as far as music rights to get the other seasons released. I do recall, when "Knots Landing" had a reunion special a few years ago, Henry Winkler (aka "The Fonz" from "Happy Days") produce the special and wanted to include the song "Open Arms" (from the rock group Journey) that Lisa covered/performed on the show. He mentioned he had a difficult time getting the rights cleared on the song before the Reunion show even aired. The song did appear on the reunion special when it aired, however, when the 1st Season DVD was released 4 months later, I thought the reunion show was going to be included. Unfortunately, it ended up only a segment of the reunion special with Joan Van Ark and Ted Shackelford (talking about their characters Val and Gary) appeared on the 1st Season DVD. Come to find out part of the problem the whole show didn't appear was partly due to the costs for the song "Open Arms" that aired on the special. And interestingly enough, some of the celebrities who didn't want to participate in the DVD release without getting paid was the other reason the reunion special did not appear on the DVD set in its entirety. In fact, when the reunion show did air, one of the stars of the show. Constance McCashin (who played the character of Laura) had a voiceover for part of the scene shown on the special. In addition, she also had her image blocked in the same scene shown. This was due to the fact that she wanted to be paid a high amount of money for her appearance, and wouldn't give her rights to use her image unless the studio agreed to the amount she wanted. The studio opted out and we got a voiceover and blocked image on that scene. Now as far as I know, because the reunion show was a new show being produced at that time, that is why this happened. As far as the actual "Knots Landing" episodes (the studio owns those), I don't think that would apply to the DVD set.......only the reunion special (to appear on the DVD set).

Another reason, similar to the "Batman" fiasco with having famous stars appear on the show (who are now dead), Warner Brothers might have to get the rights to the estates. In particular to "Knots Landing", Ava Gardner appeared in either season 5 or 6 of the show. This is just an assumption on my part, but this to could be a problem for the DVD set getting released. "Batman" is an older show than "Knots Landing" and "Batman" had a whole lot of guest stars on the show. "Knots Landing" had their share of guest stars, but I don't think as many (at least not dead yet).

There was somewhere that I read (I believe it was on Warner's Facebook page) that they were considering releasing "Knots Landing" on Warner's Archive program. They released 2 (or 3) season's of "Falcon Crest" on the Archive program. These are not always pressed discs from the archive program, but made to order DVD-R's (a lower quality of disc). I know when the Warner Archive initially releases the first batch of product, they release them on pressed discs. Then they will start producing (in a second pressing....or made to order) on DVD-R's. I only know this because that is how they have handled the 70's sitcom "Alice" which I bought the first 4 seasons from the Archive program. I also bought the 2 season sitcom show "Flo", in which they did the same thing. I don't know for sure if they do this for every show.

Whether Warner Brother's does a retail release OR on their Warner Archive program......I will buy "Knots Landing" either way. And hopefully they will release a "complete" set......I don't think I can do the "Season by season" box sets because Warner's taking way too long to release these by season. Let's just get this show done already.....please Warner!!!!

There were comments somewhere that I read the music rights were not the issue as such more Knots Landing was coming out. It could be timing issue as may be they are looking to see how best to package the series going forward. S3 is a critical season for me as it is were we say goodbye to Sid Fairgate and start being introduced to new characters like Mac and eventually Greg Sumner. I stopped following Knots like Dallas after 1988 as other things came out in my life as such as College, work, starting my career, etc that had more of my focus.

Some of the TV shows like Knots were more important during my growing up phase as I related to the kids in the show, especially their peer pressure and/or just growing up from kids to teenagaer and the to adults. I read somewhere that Michelle Lee was very distraught when Steve Shaw was killed during a motorcycle accident in 1990. Steve Shaw always look at Michelle Lee as 2nd mother as such it only makes sense that Ms. Lee likely took the news of Steve Shaw's death very hard.

younger1968......just curious to know.....where did you read that? Was it on the "Knots Landing" Forum website? Was it the Warner Brothers Facebook page? Can you send the link to this post......I hadn't heard of this.....and if that's the case....I just hope they release the complete series (I would re-buy the 1st and 2nd seasons if I had to.....as long as I got the complete series).

Like I said before, I have always thought and read that any future "Knots Landing" DVD release was delayed due to music rights issues (particular to the seasons where Lisa Hartman sang a lot of '80's pop songs).

This link discusses the music rights issue being a huge obstacle"http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/articles/holdup.cfm#KnotsLanding. I am going to see if I can find a more updated link to see if the information had changed. I read something, but I am not sure how reliable it was that music rights appear to be ironed out. However, I have to wonder if that comment was more wishful thinking than reality when it came to music rights.

Until WB makes KL releases official, I have posted seasons 3-14 on Dailymotion, should anyone be interested.

It is sad that Knots Landing has not been able to solve issues with the rights. I have always felt there was an audience for both Knots Landing as well as Falcon Crest as those shows should do better on dvd!

It is too bad that the Knots Landing website has not been able to leverage the network on releasing more of the seasons. I really was looking forward to S3 as it was when torch was passed by Sid Fairgate. I just wish we had a few more seasons of Sid Fairgate before he was set adrift. I always felt Sid's character had lots of potential kind of like Bobby Ewiing.

Ahh, Knots!!!

What a fun show to watch!! Admittedly, the wife and I sorta phased out on the last year or two but we loved watching it for years!!

Pretty funny on GH a week or so ago that involved one man trying to seduce another with two seasons of KNOTS and a bottle of wine!!!

Unfortunately I have some bad news to report on the status of "Knots Landing" being released on DVD. Now I know Warner Brothers is the studio that currently holds rights to the show, and I also know that music rights are holding up the show to get released on DVD. I thought maybe another studio like Shout! Factory would release "Knots Landing" since they did such a great job on "WKRP In Cincinnati" DVD box set last year (which also had stalled on DVD due to music rights issues). So I decided to ask the question to Shout! Factory on there facebook page. Here is the exchange:

QUESTION:

I have been getting some mixed messages from different sites on the internet.....so I thought I go directly to the source. Is Shout! Factory working on getting the rights to "Knots Landing"? If not, is it due to music rights being too costly? And if is, couldn't you work out a deal like you did with "WKRP In Cincinnati"? I just have more faith in your studio to release this show than any other studio (especially when it comes to music rights). There is a very loyal fan base for this show, who REALLY would like this series to get released on DVD. Thank you in advance for your answers.

ANSWER:
Shout! Factory - I don't have all the details, but I do know that Knots Landing is not in the works, nor are there any plans for it, sorry!

So unfortunately, "Knots Landing" won't be released by Shout! Factory. One could only hope that Warner Archive will release it (and hopefully, not by individual seasons sets....but as a "complete" series set). I read somewhere recently that Warner Brothers had gotten the rights ironed out with Lorimar, but there were still some music issues pending. So it really is just up to Warner Brothers at this point on what they are going to do with the series. They are definitely NOT licensing it to Shout! Factory any time soon!!! Maybe they will consider Star Vista (Time Life) or VEI? I don't know.....I don't think this show will ever get finished on DVD.....losing hope :(

I really have no clue about this, but does Shout! license much work from Warner for TV properties, especially since the Archive program started?

KL is a grail series for me, but I always assumed if it was low enough on WB's radar to license it out that they'd just make it an Archive title, like Falcon Crest.

Any other studio & I'd hope for a licensing (like Shout! putting out the Colbys set), but I assume Warner will put it out themselves whenever & however they see fit (after clearance issues are taken care of.)

Again, I speak with no knowledge of studio practices and without having done any research as to how much TV Warner licenses out to independents.

Actually Warner Brothers has licensed their properties before to Shout! Factory. I know of two shows: "Welcome Back Kotter" (which was released last year) and "Norm" (a 90's sitcom featuring Norm McDonald of SNL). Both got "complete" DVD releases from Shout! Factory. This year Shout! Factory is also releasing "Sisters" (seasons 1 & 2 only), which I THINK (not positive on this one) is a Warner Brothers show (it was a Lorimar show....like "Knots Landing"). I thought for sure since Shout! was releasing "Sisters", they would have tried to get "Knots Landing" as well....but apparently, I was wrong. :(

Actually it's no rumor, S3 is being stalled because of music issues. Unfortunately the following seasons included a LOT of popular 80's songs and the licensing is quite expensive. I actually remember asking Warner Archive to release it, unfortunately the music clearance issues turned out to be too much for them. Right now, it all comes to Shout Factory or Time Life, since they managed to release problematic shows before.

Thanks for the info & clarification mrz7 & dressedtokill.

The good news about music issues is that they can be worked out somehow eventually. Unfortunately the time it takes to do so is what sucks.

But as long as DVDs are still being produced and sold, there's a chance it'll come out. Each year I'm surprised by some of the sets you wouldn't think would make it that wind up coming out.

I would say that at this point, fans probably should just go ahead and transfer their off-air CBS recordings to DVD.
