The blu conversion is from MKV to m4v using Handbrake's AppleTV3 preset. Full 1080p resolution. 31gig file down to 8 gig.

Steve, sorry to say, but I get significantly faster rips and conversions. I am using an LG BR burner in a Bytecc USB 3 housing going to an external USB 3 drive. BRs typically take less than 45 min to rip, going as fast as about 7x. My standard conversion in HandBrake is to 720P at a constant quality of 20 and at those settings I get about 60 FPS conversion speed. When I keep full 1080 res it slows down to about 45 FPS. Conversions of DVDs that aren't interlaced are 250-300 FPS (!). Your test speeds sound right, but your conversion speeds seem way off. Have you looked at Activity Monitor to see how much processor capacity is being used? Even at the speeds I am getting, it rarely goes over 90% of capacity. This Quad Core Mini really rocks.

Ripping using MakeMKV of a 125-minute blu-ray is going to take around 35 minutes, using a Samsung burner at 2.2x speeds. I use the AppleTV 3 preset in Handbrake. 1920x1080, 30FPS, H264, Constant quality RF 20. I'll play around with the settings (I see that it is cropping the video) and see what happens.

It crops out any unused image area, so that will be on the top and bottom on most movies, more on 2.35.

LOL yeah only the bloggers had it off track, not Apple. This is a refutation of a rumor, so which is true, the rumor or the refutation? Hopefully the former. Got half the cash saved up for my 27" and will put the rest on credit so late december works for my savings plan!

Waiting for the preorder.   I am all in on this one.  Maxing out the processor with 16GB memory and 768 SSD.   Don't *think* I will need to upgrade the graphics card beyond the included NVIDIA GeForce 675MX Processor with 1GB memory.  If the upgrade price is negligible beyond that spec I may consider it.   In all, I am guessing this desktop will close in to about $4k in price, but I am inflating it just a tad.

If you don't game much the only places you would really see the difference is in transitions and other things like that in FCPx
