Hi guys, Any guidance on what to do with mkv container formats? How does one get WMC to recognize/play videos in such a container format? I do not want to use any external players. Any thoughts?

Download the CCCP codec pack: http://www.cccp-project.net/ You'll probably want to uncheck the Media Player Classic box. You might need to update DirectX first. This codec pack will get MKV files to play in Windows Media Player. What operating system are you using? XP? Vista? Win7? 32-bit or 64-bit? WMC doesn't like MKV files for whatever reason, but there are OS specific workarounds.

I have Win 7 64 bit. I'm only really interested in playing in WMC via MB, so if there is workaround that makes this essentially seamleass, please let me know. Thnaks.

Well, there are lots of ways to get their - you can get a standard MKV splitter on it's own, easy.

You can choose a Codec pack (CCCP, Shark, K-Lite are the big 3)

You can use LAV on it's own

Their is an MKV Splitter/viewer built into both ArcSoft TotalMedia Theater3 and PDVD12.

THe free program mkv2vob is what people use to convert the format to something playable on a Playstation. Maybe it will be useful to you too. Despite its name, it turns mkv into mpg.

Note though, VOBs cannot carry HD-Audio formats in pure, and they are an SD designed container.

That;s true, the audio is converted into something else. The video remains HD.

Get the Shark007 codec pack. Everything is included. People say its bloated but it covers all your bases. Heck WMC can even bitstream HD audio.

I use K-lite - just check to see what it is installing before you install.

K-Lite can be downloaded at www.codecguide.com

If you are running a 64 bit system, download and install the 32bit and the 64bit plugins
