AFI has released many different lists since the famous 1996 100 movies list. The object of this thread is to challenge people to choose one or more of those lists and try to see all the films they haven't already seen.

Anyone is welcome to join in at anytime, we're always welcoming of newcomers to discuss these movies (and the ones not on the lists!

100 Movies
50 Stars (career began before the year 1951)
100 Laughs
100 Thrills
100 Passions
100 Heroes and Villains
100 Songs
100 Quotes
100 Cheers
100 Movies - 10th Anniversary
10 of 10 (forthcoming June2008)

There is not necessarily an objective at this time, a revote has been performed on the 100 movies list in the past, but not enough people have yet completed any of the genre lists. The greatest enjoyment comes from watching and sharing so many great films.

Regardless of your personal feelings of what was left out or what was included, the lists are all great guidebooks into the rich history of American cinema. Enjoy!

Just below I'll be posting the lists:

100 Stars:

The list called 100 stars, was the first list released after the inaugeral 100 movies list.

The qualification was a career debut before the end of 1950 or the star's death (therefore completing a body of work).

The list itself was just of the stars (and there were only 25 in each of the male and female category, leaving only 50 stars in the actual list); Jeff Gross, in the last thread, compiled the top five films (by IMDB ranking that were also made under the AFI's American qualifications) for each star and created this list. Of these 250 films, there are many overlaps, and only 107 films in this list that aren't on one of the other AFI lists.

There were several descrepancies in the original list, because IMDB ranking didn't distinguish between starring roles and mere cameos or voiceover work (such as for James, Dean, Ava Gardner, Lawrence Olivier and Orson Welles). We've tried to weed these out as much as possible, and thanks to the many suggestions of Evan Case, I think this list is fairly reflective of the actual STARDOM of each individual actor. edit to remove Quo Vadis from Sophia Loren (a cameo) and replace with Operation Crossbow on 5/1/08.

I'm in.

I'll update this post with my totals later today. I've been doing this myself already for a couple years. I know that I only have 3 left on the first list (Sound of Music, An American in Paris, & Birth of a Nation)

I've got less than 10 left on the thrills and about 20 in the comedies.

Adam - I'll take up your invitation to complete the 100 Songs challenge, and the soon to be announced Quotes challenge

I've finished Films, Thrills, Passions, Laughs, Heroes/Villians.

I have 5 more Songs to finish that list:

The Big Broadcast of 1938 (1938)
Bright Eyes (1934)
The Sandpiper (1965)
Beaches (1988)
Hair (1979)

Took some doing to find copies of these movies from the lists: Porgy and Bess, Stormy Weather (great movie), The Freshman, Safety Last.

Alright, transfering over my info:

AFI 100 movies: done

AFI 100 thrills: done

AFI 100 laughs: done

AFI 100 passions: 3 left -

Porgy & Bess
The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Way Down East

AFI 100 heroes/villians: done

AFI 100 songs: 11 left (I'm listing this for completeness, but I'm only going to make an effort to see the first 4 of these, cause the rest of them look absolutely horrible, and I hate the song which is supposedly the reason to see them) -

Stormy Weather
Porgy & Bess
Cover Girl
Chicago
Beaches
Fame
Flashdance
The Sandpiper
The Rose
Dirty Dancing
8 Mile

AFI 100 Stars: done. At least as far as I'm concerned. I may not have seen every film by all 100 of them, nor even all the ones listed here, but I've seen enough of the important films of each one to satisfy me.

AFI 100 Movie Quotes: I'll evaluate this after I see the final list.

AFI 25 Movie Scores: ditto.

So, "No one puts baby in the corner" is one of the 100 greatest movie quotes of all time but "Luke, I am your father" isn't. Discuss. :D:D:D

barring the lack of the Empire Strikes Back quote, I think this is the best list the AFI's yet put out.

I was actually fairly disappointed. Yes, there are some great quotes in there, but while I'll admit that the top 10 are all famous, there's many better ones than some of those. I realize it's a fine line, but this was more a list of famous quotes than great quotes (though there's certainly a lot of overlap there). I guess I can't complain about any of the top 10 quotes being famous, but some of them aren't very good IMO. And Adam, you've already hit on what may be the biggest travesty.

I've seen most all of these films, I'll have to go through the list and see what I haven't.

I agree with George's comment that this was more a list of famous quotes rather than a list of great quotes. It might have been better to make a list of quotable movies rather than actual quotes due to the number of slots taken up by Casablanca, Sunset Boulevard, Oz, etc...

There were at least two glaring omissions, one of which was already mentioned "I am your father!", and the incredible excahnge between Walter Neff & Phyllis Dietrichson in "Double Indemnity". Of course, in my view, about 60 of the top 100 would've been from Wilder movies, and I was extremely disappointed by his representation - that and the complete lack of quotes from The Coens & Preston Sturges. Instead there was a large amount of good quotes from mediocre movies.

Even when they leave out some of my favorite choices (this year they were "I'm Spartacus!" and "Klaatu Barada Nikto"), I can never be disappointed in the AFI specials. Where else can you see three hours of beautifully presented classic movie clips in prime time? These shows are the fastest moving three hours on television.

Yes, the EMPIRE burn made me upset, especially when something like RINGS got in there, but it was the fastest three hours on TV. Another favorite line of mine that didn't make it: "Anything for the man who shot Liberty Valance." We all have lines we love that didn't make it, and some because they just aren't AFI material, as there are at least five or six better lines from ANIMAL HOUSE than: Toga! Toga!

Please Adam. Star Wars is filled with some of the most obvious, hackyned and trite dialouge ever put to page by purple pen. I'm not a fan of the line you mention, but even it were worthy, the rest of the script(s) has so very many bad lines, that points were probably deducded from the one you cite.

If anyone wants to get upset, the lack of Preston Sturges should make lose sleep; not a missing line from Star Wars.

Lew,

I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. This isn't a "100 Screenplays" list, it's "100 quotes".

Some of the quotes that made it are ridiculously trite & hackneyed:

"Love means never having to say you're sorry,"

"Show me the money!"

"I'm walking here! I'm walking here!"

"After all, tomorrow is another day!"

"La-dee-da, la-dee-da,"

"Hello, gorgeous,"

"Nobody puts Baby in a corner,"

"I'm king of the world!"
