What's the optimum distance from the TV screen to your seating postition. I'm looking to buy an new TV and would like the formula.

Thanks!

I believe I read that a good ratio is 1.5x the screen size. So if you have 55 inch tv, you should sit back at least 82 inches or about 7 feet. I believe I read this in consumer reports.

I think a lot of it is just personal preference. I've found that 1.5x the screen is too close for me, but that 2x to 2.5x is about right (for me).

The Viewing Distance Calculator provides these numbers:

TV Size (Diag inches)16:9 THX Rec16:9 THX Max16:9 Max for 1080i 404.56.35.2 455.07.15.9 505.67.96.5 556.18.77.2 606.79.47.8 657.310.28.5 TV Size (Diag inches)4:3 THX Rec4:3 THX Max4:3 Max for 1080i 404.15.84.8 454.66.55.4 505.17.26.0 555.67.96.6 606.28.77.2 656.79.47.8

The THX Rec is the distance in feet that THX recommends for movie theaters. The THX Max column is the max distance (back row).
