As in header.

Friend has a 1st gen iPhone which was jailbroken. Safe to just update via iTunes?

I hate to give you a definitive "yes."

However, I have updated my jailbroken iPhone many times
prior to version 2.0 and had no problems other than the fact
that it will temporarily brick the phone and you will need to do
a total reset and start from scratch.

As long as the iPhone is backed up on the computer via iTunes
it should restore everything under 2.0.

Again, all based on prior experience, but not with 2.0. Don't see
why it would be any different.

Please let us know how it all works out.

Yeah, I believe it completely blanks the phone.

However, all your information is backed up via iTunes and
should be restored with your first sync.
