i've heard quite a few good things about olevia over the past two years, and i like the price...
is this the one to go with, or are there better 47"-51" units out there for under $2000?
(for the record- i won't be watching any tv on it, it will strictly be for upconverted dvd and, eventually, hd/blu ray.)

there are many better, pick a brand.

You seem to want to watch reference material but are looking at a LCD panel, why?

If you want the most accurate image with highest contrast ratios (and best blacks) consider plasma. There are lots of options in your price range.

Remember that a good 720p panel is much better than a mediocre 1080p one.

Good luck

really 50/50 on this one. If you get one hope it doesn't break if it does you'll be out of luck, most tier 3 tvs don't have replacement parts readily available.
