My top 10:
The Barbarian Invasions
Raja
Laurel Canyon
Happy, Here and Now
Bright Leaves
Dogville
L'Histoire de Marie et Julien
City of God
Lost in Translation
Ken Park

I may edit this to add more info later, but don't forget the wonderful thing that is the IMDB :) 2003 was a good year, there were plenty of other top 10 worthy films.

My top 10, as of 1/14/04. Please note that I have constructed my list with films that I had the most fun watching. There are other films that most people would consider to be "better" than some on my top 10, and I would probably agree. I just prefer a list with highly-entertaining films. The list may need revision at some point because there are quite a few 2003 films I plan to check out on DVD.

The top four are definate:

1) The Triplets of Belleville
2) Lost in Translation
3) American Splendor
4) LOTR: Return of the King

I had a hard time ranking the remaining six:

5) Shanghai Knights
6) Looney Tunes: Back in Action
7) Phone Booth
8) Matchstick Men
9) Hulk
10) Russian Ark

Honorable mentions, great and significant films:
Finding Nemo, In America, Last Samurai, Master & Commander, Mystic River, Seabiscuit, Station Agent

Honorable mentions, entertaining popcorn films:
Bubba Ho-Tep, Down with Love, Pirates of the Caribbean, Rundown, T-3

My biggest disappointments of 2003:
Big Fish, Kill Bill Volume One (may change mind when I see v.1 and 2 together as one film), Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions

NOTE: I did not hate these films, I just did not think they were as good as I was expecting. They are NOT my choice for the worst films of 2003.

The worst of 2003:
The only film I saw that was truely terrible was Christmas Vacation 2, which was a made-for-TV-movie and doesn't really count. I do have a slight interest to see the bomb that is Gigli, though!

Just thought I'd post what I have thus far. I want to make clear this is NOT everybody who has posted in here -- it's just a preliminary list that includes the Top 10 in this thread, up through Raymond_H on Page 1 of this thread. It also does not include those individual's 2003 Film List films, so the only semi-accurate tally is the Total Score (at least it's accurate when tallying everybody's Top 10's through Raymond_H, plus mine and Colin Hartnett's).

A completed tally, plus the breakdown of users (like the old chart) should be finished this weekend, but I thought you might want to see where the trend is (and for #1, it's not terribly surprising :)).

Until the "full version" is complete, enjoy this one!

looking great Dana, thanks for all your efforts.

I wonder if City of God's votes were split between last year and the present...

Not seen yet: 21 Grams, Elephant, Bad Santa, Triplets of Bellville...I'll add others once I look at the lists.

Current top 10 (30) as of Feb 6, 2004

1. Return of the King
2. City of God
3. In America
4. Master and Commander: TFSotW
5. Mystic River
6. American Splendor
7. Monster
8. Cold Mountain
9. X2: X-Men United
10. Pirates of the Carribean

11-20
Whale Rider, Seabiscuit, House of Sand and Fog, Matrix 3, Finding Nemo, Lost in Translation, Matrix 2, Bend it Like Beckham, School of Rock, Better Luck Tomorrow

21-30
28 Days Later, Italian Job, Kill Bill Vol 1, The Cooler, Big Fish, Elf, Bubba Ho-Tep, Thirteen, Animatrix Series, Lost in La Mancha

Notes: I was in the "loved em" camp of the Matrix sequels. Sorry haters, I thought they were both interesting and exciting films and I enjoyed the direction they took the plot.

Not such a big fan of Kill Bill. I liked it and appreciated some of the artistry to it, but mostly it felt like QT riffing on himself, an homage to his own homages.

I had several action and comedy pieces in my top 20-30, including X2 in my top 10. I really do love that film, I enjoy the character motivations driving the plot lines, the acting is top notch as you would expect with the talent involved, and man does the action look great...straight out of the comics just like Spider-Man was last year.

Pirates was there too, a total shocker to me but a great reminder that outstanding films needent be serious only. Adventure, action and comedy can be done with great talent as well and I generally do have at least one or two comedies somewhere around my top 10 (like Jay and Silent Bob last year).

All 5 Best Pix nominees made my top 15. My 4 faves all did extremely well with the Oscar noms, so I certainly will be glued to the show (like I wouldn't be).

Top Ten not in any particular order.

1.) The Rundown - a very overlooked and well done action film. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this film. An adventure flick that is every bit as good as Pirates of the Carribbean.

2.) The Hulk - Im surprised to see how many people actaually put this film in their top ten. I thought I was the only one who appreciated what Ang Lee was trying to do. The film has it's problems to be sure but it was a noble effort on the director's part and it does not deserve the backlash it recieved.

3.) Radio - What can I say it was a well done "feel good" film with good performances, especially by Cuba Gooding Jr. It is sad that he hasn't been recognized for his performance.

4.) Seabiscut - same comments for Radio apply to this film as well.

5.) Open Range - Damn good western, Kevin Costner should nominated for best director, but Peter Jackson should win.

6.) The Last Samurai - A very well done historic epic. Cruise performance is every bit as good as Wantanbe's, I don't care what most of you on the forum say. Many of you people will find any excuse not to give Tom his due.

7.) Bad Santa - The funniest damn movie, I've seen in a while. Billy Bob Thornton and Tony Cox should both be up for best actor and supporting actor.

8.) The Matrix Reloaded - I'll never understand why so many people complained about this film. The stunts were better, the story expanded to where it had to logically go, it had some problemms but overall a good sequel.

9.)Pirates of the Carribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl - Once again Jerry Bruckhiemer proves he is the man.

10.) The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - I just have one word: Shelob.

I, almost forgot to mention Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. - Like the Last Samurai, a well done historic epic with very good acting.

I haven't seen "Out of Time" yet but from what I've heard Im quite sure it will make my list.

Thanks for your efforts Dana. Not surprising that only 2 of my top 10 films made the top 30 list, though I still have Capturing The Friedman's to see.

There are 7 of these I haven't seen. Better than last year when I think it was 10+ from the initial list that I hadn't seen.

Excellent work Dana! :emoji_thumbsup: :emoji_thumbsup:

5/10 of my Top 10 are in our Top 10 and 8/10 in our Top 30.

Les invasions barbares (The Barbarian Invasions) is the only one I have'nt seen in our Top 30.

Two of our group's Top 10, X2:X-Men United (B) and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (B+) are not even in my Top 50.

My 2 Top 10 films that did'nt make it to our Top 30 are Etre et avoir (To Be and To Have) and Ying xiong (Hero) which both had 2002 worldwide releases year. I'm not sure if I need to take out Hero out of my Top 10 since it has been rescheduled for a 2004 USA theatrical release. It's only 2003 official theatrical screening in the USA was during the Palm Springs Internationl Film Festival. Etre et avoir had a 2003 NY (or USA) limited release. So lot of voting forum members here have'nt had the chance to see them in theaters. The best way to view them now is by renting or buying their all-region foreign import DVDs.

Keys movies that I should see in order for my Top 10 to be officially declared as final are :):

The Son (Le fils)
Ten
The Triplets of Belleville (Triplettes de Belleville, L)
The Last Letter (Dernière lettre, La)
Love & Diane
Bus 174 (Ônibus 174)
Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary
The Barbarian Invasions (Les invasions barbares)
Lilya 4-ever
Monster
The Company
Divine Intervention (Yadon ilaheyya)
The Cooler
Pieces of April
Japanese Story
Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara,
Buffalo Soldiers
Japan (Japon)

Most of the above (foreign films) had worldwide releases year of 2002 anyway, so I guess by the time I view them this poll will be history and long forgotten. In the end, personally, am making personal Top 10/Greatest all-time/year lists based on their worldwide release year. :D

Okay, prelim #2. This includes all members here who have posted a full, ranked Top 10 list (there were a couple who had less than 10 or who didn't rank their lists; I did not include those). It still doesn't have the full 2003 Film List entries from everybody, yet -- that'll come with the next update, along with the list of members.

Good thing I finished going through the list -- there've been some changes.

Am I reading the table correctly that I'm the only one who didn't put Return of the King in their top 10, at least until Brian posted his list that is? Ditto on 21 Grams.

New list there are 5 I haven't seen and I'll be trying to see Friedman's as soon as it comes out next week on DVD and Seabiscuit is now at the top of my Netflix list but is out of stock. Will try and see Big Fish in the next couple of weeks too. House of Sand is a pretty low priority for me, may not see it until DVD. Matchstick Men I'm not really interested in.

Hi Brook,

Actually there were 16 people who didn't have it in their Top 10. The second number after the colon is those who didn't have it in their 2003 Film List, but that number isn't accurate right now because I haven't finished entering everybody's 2003 Film List entries (which will take a little time). The reason that the second number is somewhat close to the first number is that, using my tracker tool, in order to enter films into the Top 10 list for a given year, you first must have them in your Film List for that year. So for almost all members here, their 2003 Film List matches exactly what their Top 10 list is (for now, anyway, until I can go back and fill in the rest of the 2003 Film List entries for those who posted them in that thread).

I wanted to post the Total Score results because I had those ready, but I did make a note the other columns weren't accurate because it's not 100% done. I should have that later today, along with the list of members and the explanation of what the columns mean.

Sorry for the confusion!

Time to resurrect this thread with the completed stats.

Note that the number of films seen by your name may not match what you have in the 2003 Film List thread -- there are several reasons for this: One, you have a film listed in your 2003 list that wasn't in theatres in 2003; two, you have a film listed twice; three, I could not find an entry on IMDB for that film (or the film name was listed twice for that year and because you didn't provide a director I couldn't distinguish the film); four...well, many other reasons :). In any case, the number listed by your name should be pretty close to what you had in your list. If it isn't, or if you notice your name has grey numbers (or only has 11 or so items) but you're sure you posted your list in the 2003 Film List thread, please email me or PM me and I'll address it. Also, if your name isn't in the list at the bottom of the table, but you did post a Top 10 list in this thread, make SURE you have 10 items in your list and that they're RANKED; if so, email/PM me.

Lastly, the stats should include all updates made through 3PM today.

Enjoy :)

  1. Position Film Title Total Score: A summation of each film's position in each contributor's top 10, with points given as follows: 1st place = 10, 10th place = 1. 10th place ties get .5 points per tie, limit to 2. All ties above 10th place get full points in each position, so long as the total points for the contributor does not exceed 55 (10+9+...+1); if that happens, remainder of tie will be divided like they were 10th place. Fractional Weighted Total: The total combined fractional weighted scores of each contributor's film. Fractional weighted scores are computed for each contributor by the position of the film against the total number of films seen -- i.e., if a contributor saw 50 films, 1st place is 50/50 (1.00), 10th place is 41/50 (0.82). This gives more weight to lists with higher film totals. Top 10 List Appearances : 2002 Film List Appearances: Ratio of a film's appearance in this thread to how many appearances it makes in contributors' lists in the 2002 Film List thread. This gives better value to the Weighted Average (and Total Score) numbers. Weighted Average: Total Score divided by Top 10 List Appearances. This is considered weighted because it only takes into account those contributors who have the film in the top 10. Unweighted Average: Total Score divided by total number of Top 10 contributors (currently 62).
Contributing members [Number of Films in Top 30 Seen/30 : Total Films Seen]; if your name is not on here, and you are sure your list is complete, email me. Grey numbers beside names denotes 10 or less -- if you have only those listed here in the Top 10 list, then you didn't post a list in the 2003 Film List.

Meant to post the following update before the stats update, but the stats include my changes.

I updated my Top 10 list -- Mystic River cracks the list at #8 (in my personal list, not the stats list!), pushing out L'auberge espagnole.
