Any way to shut off or circumvent this? Low-contrast, desaturated night scenes can be distracting when this process tries to smother the subtle gradations.

Can you post a pic of this dithering?

I find it difficult to believe dithering is "that bad". Most dithering problems I come across tend to be...

    1. The actual content sucks.
    2. The player isn't set correctly
    3. Finally actually seeing a screen present all the issues that come through in the source(basically...you never saw the imperfections in your content before, cause your previous display wasn't this good)

Watch in Cinema mode, with the settings at default. It is okay to increase the contrast if you want to. You should not see any dithering at 6-8 feet on a 55 inch set.
