Doesn't surprise me.

I would expect this to be the "norm" moving forwarded --
taking classic films and converting them to 3D.

I'm interested in checking it out.

This is the Laurel and Hardy version we are talking about?
What, the public-domain one? Ah. That would explain a lot.
(Also why it's not properly being called "March of the Wooden Soldiers", as VCI might complain.
Read the title and knew Disney was prepping the Annette Funicello version for disk, but didn't think they'd put it on their list for conversions...)

I can't for the life of me remember where I recently read an interview with somebody at WB lamenting the high cost of 3D conversions with regards catalogue titles. If WB is hesitating ponying up the required funds to depthificate their catalogue titles, what PD outfit is going to be able to afford a 3D conversion? A decent 3D conversion. Or is Babes most likely to wind up the product of that on-the-fly algorithm they build into 3D tv sets that sort-of corrugates the picture? If that's the case they can shove their 3D conversions where Ted Turner was invited to shove his crayons.
Is 3D the new Colorization?

There's a slew of computer converted 3-D versions of PD titles on Amazon from a company in the UK, including SUDDENLY, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, THE LAST TIME I SAW PARIS, etc.
They take the image and place the left/right views behind the stereo window. But the image is flat.
Complete garbage.

Yes, any conversions I have seen of old films look terrible. The 3D Titanic might be an exception, I have'nt seen it.

It appears to be from Legend Films. Since they've actually worked with other studios before with their technology, perhaps theirs will be ok. I want to make it clear, though, I do not support retrofitting older non-3D movies with fake 3D effects, I am only pointing out that Legend can be a capable company. :D

Legend? Ah, now all bets are off. They might actually pull something off with this. They're more likely to put some effort into finding decent source materials, and they may use the release as a write-off to show the Big Boys what they can do.

I have zero interest and think it's a real shame that bogus 3-D titles are getting released while the real ones are sitting in the vaults.

You are certainly right about that! Simply infuriating!

Home-style conversions of public-domain titles? Um, yes. :(
(I still remember those pale, unnatural pastel greens and pinks on the first PD colorizations of Night of the Living Dead and It's a Wonderful LIfe.)
See related thread on those idiots who wanted to cyber-squat that 3D version of Rear Window the minute they heard about Warner and Dial M, and found out it wasn't PD.
Whether it's Legend Films or GoodTimes, wherever a new video technology raises its head, you can count down to when we'll see House on Haunted Hill and Gulliver's Travels appear in the new format...

(Why. Are we not. Surprised.
Their Sony colorizations of the Stooges and Ray Harryhausen aren't too bad, but that's when they're actually working on a real company's leash. Off the leash, they're just another vulture picking over the carcasses.)

Personally, Eric, I look on Legend as being among the Good Guys. After all, they have licenced a number of Paramount properties we'd have never seen otherwise, most specifically my all-time-favourite Monte Carlo Or Bust. I agree they do need watching when they get some new piece of tech for Christmas and start colouring in anything that moves. I think cheap 3D conversions will undermine both the classic-3D and legitimate 3D conversion market (if there is such a thing).
Personally the image manipulation area I'd like to research wouldn't be 3D, or colourisation. I'd like to see if there's any way to extrapolate detail from an image to produce a higher definition image - to (say) artificially wind back generational de-resolution, or up-rez a low-rez image without it just looking blown up and edge enhanced.

I bought the alleged 3D verson. It is utterly worthless--no 3D effect at all. (The player and TV are correctly indicating 3D, but there is no depth to the picture at all.)
The colorization is OK.

I strongly disagree. I spot checked my copy on my 42" plasma last night was very surprised at how strong, and natural looking, the 3D was in the scenes I viewed. It had a pleasing, pop-up book like effect. Which was probably the intent with this release.
I plan on viewing the entire movie soon projected on my 80" screen. I look forward to it.

For those of you who've bought this, how is the brightness?
I have the Blu-Ray from either last year or two years ago. The image had the brightness turned up to 11. I have to almost completely darken my tv to watch it. And this is on both the original B&W and on the Colorized versions.
Also, what versions are on this release? Just a 3D? or are there 2d versions included as well?
David
