Universal produced six of the finest stereoscopic movies ever made, four in glorious monochrome.
People would gain a whole new appreciation for Jack Arnold if they saw how he perfected blocking, composing, editing and moving action in depth. His stereoscopic direction surpasses everything that is being done today. Seen flat, Creature From the Black Lagoon, Revenge of the Creature, It Came From Outer Space (written by Ray Bradbury), and The Glass Web are superior B movies. Seen in 3-D, our involvement in the drama intensifies because of the films' depth and presence.

Directors Budd Boetthicher and Douglas Sirk also demonstrate their stereoscopic lensmanship in these richly textured Technicolor westerns:

The stereoscopic lensing is of extremely high quality, and the films are fully restored.
They screen regularly at 3-D Expos and festivals.
Audiences may be compelled to reconsider their opinion of digitally captured 3-D once they have a Universal title to compare.
Universal's 3-D films would gain a whole new respect among viewers if the studio would just get them out there.
Blu-ray is the perfect medium for stereoscopic films from the golden era.

I think we sometimes forget just how many 3D films were made during 1953-54. Thanks so much for bringing all of these films back to our attention.

Universal also owns these 3-D shorts: NAT KING COLE WITH RUSS MORGAN'S ORCHESTRA, CARNIVAL IN APRIL and HAWAIIAN NIGHTS.

I would like to see a Jack Arnold box-set.
All four of his stereoscopic films on 3-D Blu-ray for Christmas.

I know it was never released that way but, I would love to see The Birds released on Blu-ray with the opening titles in 3-D that were shown at the Alfred Hitchcock attraction at Universal Studios -

Hey, thanks for that link. I saw that show at Universal in 1998, and was disappointed later to find not only the show itself gone, but all the wonderful Hitchcock memorabilia in the gift shops as well. (I'd hoped to replace a couple of Bates Motel things that some kind soul had seen fit to lift from my house!) Ah, progress...

One can only hope that with the centennial next year, they'll put a couple of these into play as 3D Blu-ray releases.

Those posters are awesome. It would be great if Universal released some of these titles in 2012. I'd love to own the two "Creature" 3D flicks and "It Came from Outer Space" on 3D blu-rays.

I agree. I wish I could find images like that on the web. BTW, doesn't Van Hefflin, in the Wings of the Hawk, look like Julia Adams just goosed him?:)

Very cool posters (i think I remember the CREATURE/IT CAME FROM double feature poster. Was that '73?). Its kind of ironic that with all these great 3-D films not released to blu in that format-Universal seems to be officially releasing a JAWS 3D in that format first. So maybe if thats successful-these will follow.
I hope Universal and Paramounts plans for their centennial releases are better than Fox's rehashing in their 75th anniversary of rereleases. I was very excited by Fox's tubthumping that-but was vastly let down.
WB needs to get HOUSE OF WAX (1953) and DIAL M FOR MURDER out in 3D versions also.

Please go to universals site and request those 3d movies. if you don't they won't put them out. however jaws 3d is coming to blu ray from them in 2013 probably. if you want 3d films and I do then you better request them. the glass web, revenge of the creature, and it came from outer space
will not get put out if you don't go to universals website and request these movies.

Welcome to HTF, Mike. That's a good idea, although it's a shame if Jaws 3D would come out before the 50's titles. Jaws 3D is not going to sell well, not because it's 3D but because it's a bad movie.

Fortunately, it's not coming out as A 3D Movie, it's coming out as part of the sequel boxset. And in 3-D.
(Rather like Dial M came out as "part" of a Warner Hitchcock double set with Strangers/Train.)
It's not going to singlehandedly convert any viewer to 3-D, but those who do have it have been WAITING for a bit of 80's. Yes, even over the 50's.
Largely for symbolic reasons--Logic and experience tell me that Amityville 3-D and Spacehunter were wretchedly awful movies, but even the thought of them on Blu 3D... :D

While COMIN AT YA! officially started the 80s 3D cycle when it became a surprise hit in the Summer of 1981, PARASITE and FRIDAY THE 13TH 3 were the stragglers in 1982- 1983 is the Year of 3D for the 80s that saw the rereleases of HOUSE OF WAX and DIAL M FOR MURDER to theaters in fuil release patterns, not repertory; JAWS 3D, THE TREASURE OF THE 4 CROWNS, METALSTORM, AMITYVILLE 3D and THE MAN WHO WASNT THERE all came out, but the kickoff of the Summer of 83 was SPACEHUNTER-by far the best of a sorry lot . Its a fun movie -and in theaters the 3d was very good.
THE MAN WHO WASNT THERE was by far THE worst of the bunch.
