I'm not sure the members of the Academy would want to give the same director and producing teams the Oscar in consecutive years. For the same reason I'm not sure Lubezki will win for cinematography for the third consecutive year.

They would if it's deserving. And imo, all three are.

Best Picture is surely a 3-film toss up at this point. The run-off voting system makes it difficult for another film to sneak in there, too. But I honestly don't know which film will win between Spotlight, The Revenant, and The Big Short.

Inarritu is now the clear favorite for Director, though the Academy voters being filled with non-directors could factor in there. Miller may be helped by not competing with Scott at the Oscars. But MM:FR just has too much genre bias to overcome to win either of its two big category awards. It'll likely have to be content with Editing, Sound, Visual Effects types (and many of those could go elsewhere).

Unfortunately, as we've learned in life and stealing a line from another great film, "deserve's got nothing to do with it".:)

It's gonna take more than some linked article to convince me that "MM:FR" is a great film - or even a particularly good one, much less Oscar-worthy.

As much as I'd like to see an action movie win BP, "MM:FR" isn't a film that deserves it.

Maybe someday the "greatness" of "MM:FR" will hit me, but I still don't get it - not at all!

Ya know you were doing so well Colin. We were agreeing on films like The Finest Hours. I thought you were coming around and starting to get it. The NEW Colin. LIKING movies. Oh well..........

In all seriousness I think MMFR will have to settle for technical awards. Nothing wrong with that. The fact that it was nominated in so many Oscar categories were its real award.

And yes Colin, you still don't get the brilliance of MMFR. Not at all!!:D

I was more than satisfied with the nominations for FR, especially Picture and Director. That's an amazing achievement in an era where the Academy is very narrow minded in the type of films it nominates, even with the extra BP slots.

Winning more than technical awards has always been long odds.

Hey, I loved "Force Awakens" - we'll always have that, Tino!

Now "Force Awakens" - THAT was a fine action movie. Unlike others I could cite... ;)

Tino, I think you mean Best Song: The Hunting Ground. You have Best Score twice.
Yesterday I have watched everything that was nominated except the 2 foreign films that have not yet opened in Dallas: A War, and The Embrace of the Serpent. I do not include the nominated songs as must-see films, although I've seen Youth and Spectre.
I agree with your choices although I feel strongly that others should win instead, but you have the pulse of the Academy voters.

At Oscar HQ in the recently remodeled Samuel Goldwyn Theater waiting for the Foreign Film Symposium to start. Later, the Hairstyling and Makeup Symposium. Fun day!

I've managed to see all the film's with at least two nominations except Room, it was just lowest on my list and I ran out of time. The only craft category films I've not seen are Cinderella and the 100 year old man. And I've seen none of the song nominees, because geez.

I finished off all the major nominees a few hours ago with THE HATEFUL HATE (blah). For the most part I thought 2015 was a pretty poor year for movies. SPOTLIGHT, ROOM, MAD MAX and THE BIG SHORT were certainly the best of the bunch. It's DiCaprio's "time" to win just like it was Newman's "time" to win with THE COLOR OF MONEY but I don't think either film showcased their actor at their best.

I was rooting for Keaton last year and I'm rooting for DiCaprio this year. With that said, Redmayne probably should be picking up his second in a row. THE DANISH GIRL, overall, was flawed but the performances were something else. The same with Stallone. It would be great to see him honor but for my money Ruffalo gave perhaps the best overall performance of the year in any category.
