For example:
Good 80's Heavy Metal bands:
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Scorpions
Ozzy/Black Sabbath
Ronnie James Dio/Black Sabbath
Helix (Borderline hair band)
Def Leppard
Accept
Metallica
Motley Crue(also borderline hair band)
AC/DC
The list can go on and on.
80's Hair bands:
Poison
Twisted Sister
Trixter
Kix
Dokken
Cinderella
Skid Row
Warrant
etc. but see what I'm saying? There's good 80's "HAIR" bands
and good 80's "Heavy Metal" bands.
Then there's good 80's "Rock" bands like:
The Eagles
Styx
Kansas
Nazereth
etc.,etc. Of course a lot of good 80's bands transended from the 70's into the 80's.

Thanks for the input Sean, VH1 did have a 100 Greatest Hair Bands special about a month or two ago, it was 4 hours long and was hosted by Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, I watched all 4 hours but I can't remember all the bands, I remember #3 was Motley Crue, #2 was Twisted Sister, & #1 was Poison, I also remember thinking that some of the bands they listed are not "hair bands" in my opinion, like Jackyl or Tesla. I should try and email VH1 for the list.
Thanks again and keep the suggestions coming.

I love them, I saw them in 1983 with Kiss and was blown away. Great underrated band.Wolf Hoffman is one of the most amazing guitar players Ive ever heard.
Ive recently been rebuying alof of older stuff(Priest, Maiden,Motorhead,Suicidal etc), would you believe I couldnt find Iron Maidens Number of the Beast and Somewhere in Time within 90 miles of either the town in live in or work in,but the walls are full of Linkin Park,Manson,Slipknot,Limp Bizkit-sad sad sad
A few not mentioned yet in tis list:
Steeler - Yngies first band with I believe it was Ron Keel
Black & Blue - Holy crap was this bad!
Whitesnake - Always made me want to puke
smiley_puke.gif

TNT- Beyond words.
White Lion - When the Children Cry - what a bunch of sappy horseshit!
Grim Reaper - See You in Hell!

I still crack up thinking about when Beavis & Butthead ripped these guys apart
Killer Dwarfs-Keep the Spirit Alive-Anyone remember this ?

Y & T - Oh God,no.
And While I love Judas Priest, 2 words for you - Turbo Lover(Not to mention Ram It Down - I still have nightmares)
Ozzy went Glam for a while there too.
The mere mention of these bands made me laugh:

Jon,
Queensryche? That's like calling early Rush a hair band!
Night Ranger is iffy. The guitar solo in Don't tell me you love me is one of the best in history, and given that, I cannot call them a hair band.

Jon,
It looks like me and you have something in common!!!
WE like HEAVY METAL!!!
I have all the first release "Maiden" Cd's except for "Somewhere in Time".
Have you seen the Iron Maiden Raising Hell DVD? I got it for $10, it's in 5.1 and 2.0 stereo, the stereo is much much better than the 5.1!
Yes I am an Accept fan!
I basically share your feelings on the GAG bands!

Peter, I have not heard of Vain.
Brian, I am going to have to agree with you that Queensryche is NOT a Hair band, We are going to have to classify these bands. There is a difference between bands like Queensryche and Poison.
The problem is that: THEY ALL HAVE LONG ASS HAIR, or most of them anyway, I think by definition a "Hair" band is going to have to be guaged by the likes of Poison.
Again I think a "hair" band has a little more than just hair, "Hair" bands are girly, they wear make-up, they have BIG bleached hair(sometimes pink) and for the most part have at least one girly "Love Song"(the song may or may not be good).
Now Motley Crue will have to be classified as a "Hair" band but..... they KICK A$$! Yes some "Hair" bands KICK ASS!
Now KISS is not a "Hair" band, yes they had wild, long hair and make-up and high heels, but ARE not a "Hair" band.
I think "Hair" bands should be re-named "Girly Bands"

Jon,
I have the newer enhanced "Somewhere in Time" CD and it does seem crystal clear!
I was thinking of collecting the new enhanced Iron Maiden CD's and save my originals for collection purposes.
I listen to Accept fairly often, I think my favorite songs are, Balls to the Wall and Fast as a Shark!
The Raising Hell DVD was filmed in 1993 and was made to celebrate Bruce Dickinson's last performance with Iron Maiden and is narrarated by illusionist Simon Drake, Interesting!
I think the Brave New World CD is great and am glad to see Bruce back where he belongs! Plus they kept Janick, and Adrian is back, and the 3 guitarists do a good job!I just don't think theres room For Paul Di'Anno.

Speaking of Brave New World: Does the song, "The Wicker Man" have anything to do with the movie? I love Iron Maiden and could see that as a possibility. I have a copy of the disc from Napster and don't have the lyrics on hand.

Brad, yes I believe the Wicker Man in the song and the Wicker Man in the movie is the same entity.
I believe the Wicker Man is an English urban legend so to speak, but cannot say for sure, but should research this myself.
I can't say that the movie is related to the song, but it would be real cool if they worked this song into the movie

I would bet Rob Gillespie or one of our members from England would know the legend of the Wicker Man.

OK, for a little female input. . .
First, I find the term "hair band" rather derogatory, stressing a band's "image" more than their talent, but I'll let that slide. Some of these bands are truly, truly talented -- they just happen to think a certain "look" should be part of the whole package. (At least back in the 80's. These bands who are still together today have obviously progressed beyond the glam image of the 80's.)
Dokken -- My absolute favorite. So many classics, including "Into the Fire", "It's Not Love", "Dream Warriors" and "Alone Again". Don has the most amazing voice (and cheekbones). :)
Motley Crue -- Fabulous look, and great hooks. Vince Neil is NOT the best singer in the world, but the band was/is just as much about attitude. Classic "Looks That Kill", "Live Wire" and "Too Young to Fall in Love".
Ratt -- Not quite as glam, but years later as I listen to "81 91", I realize they had some fine, fine hooks. "Round and Round" -- fabulous! Songs like "Shame Shame Shame" and "Loving You's a Dirty Job" are nice and nasty-sounding.
Winger -- Lightweight in comparison, but their "Headed for a Heartbreak" is one of the most beautiful rock ballads from the 80's. Kip's still doing solo work.
Cinderella -- I was just listening to them today, and "Somebody Save Me" so kicks *ss! And "Nobody's Fool" is pretty and haunting.
Def Leppard -- Good stuff, though nothing which followed had quite the raw sound of "Rock Brigade" and "Wasted".
Whitesnake -- Perhaps borderline "hair band", but their early albums had great stuff like "Slide it In" and "Love Ain't No Stranger" before they went a little soft with songs like "Here I Go Again".
Skid Row -- Sebastian Bach has great pipes, and "18 and Life" and the anthemic "Youth Gone Wild" are classic!
Dang, that makes me so nostalgic for the days of really great rock!

What kills me about "Here I Go Again" is that it was a remake of a song they already did years earlier, and it sounded virtually the same. Of course, the remake was accompanied by an awesome video (featuring the famous Tawny Kitaen nipple shot) which catapulted them to stardom for a little while.
