The only redeeming thing about NSNA was it starred Clay Basket.

Certainly a redeeming value! She was perfect in that role and sad she didn't enter the official Bond cannon as such.

I think my favorite pre-credits sequence would be Thunderball and Octopussy, both set the tone for the rest of the picture. Favorite titles are You Only Live Twice and OHMSS.

I was with Sultan/Joe at his first viewing of Never and can confirm the hatred. I hated it, too. 😁

I always wished that once NSNA was under the same ownership as the other films that they would replace the music with some John Barry.
While that would help, it would still just be a lame film with better music. It's amazing that 20+ years of legal wrangling resulted

I wanted so much to like NSNA and even gaslighted myself into defending it when it was first released. In my opinion, it's not just a bad Bond film but a bad ill conceived film overall . It had a ton of production problems and it shows. Apart from one or two scenes, it's pretty unmemorable and probably never should have been made. This is not to say that some of the lesser titles in the EON Bond catalog are better movies, but at least there is a visual, musical and casting DNA that is reassuring and comfortable. NSNA was ambitious - location shooting etc. Kershner's directing style was quite foreign from the consistent line of fairly interchangable Bond veterans - Young, Hamilton, Gilbert, Hunt, Glen - that had been helming the films since the series' inception. Perhaps that is why NSNA seems so jarring to this day. That and it's simply a terrible film.

I know I will suffer a lot of wrath for this.
Nothing can help Never Say Never Again. I have NEVER considered it part of the series which is is not. I have seen it twice theatrically and really despise for it for so many reasons. I remember when the "battle of the Bonds" happened and although I was at the Premiere of Octopussy, Octopussy is the OFFICIAL next Bond as part of the UA series. Connery later said he had NEVER worked on such an unprofessional production. He was called back for reshoots, which he hated even on the 60's Bonds. He NEVER liked the fact that the UA productions took up 6 months of his life and of course, the main reason was that he felt he should have been the "third" producer so he would get his fair share of the profits. This film was Sean's middle finger to Harry and Cubby. What a thanks for making a former brick layer, coffin polisher and milkman an international star. remember at the Premiere/Champagne early morning screening of this film when the shark was killed underwater and the audiences actually booed that the shark was killed?! This is how much the film annoyed folks. I would not have wanted to see Sean back as Bond after Diamonds. But when he came back for this and Diamonds, nothing seemed to matter to folks I speak with. It didn't matter how bad the production values were or how boring the film was, like NEVER, just that Sean was back. Bond jogging next to Felix, throwing urine into the face of a bad guy in a fight scene, seeing his hair different shades throughout the film due to reshoots and the close up slow-motion scene of him and Kim on the horse going over the cliff with the terrible bluescreen behind him. I was howling. I can give you a lot more facts but then this really requires a new thread so we can discuss further. But this would be what the future Bonds after Diamonds would have been like had Connery stayed on.
I wrote my post before I read yours. We're on the same page.

jayembee,
I understand that and although Kim Basinger was terrible, Barbara Carrera stole the show. The '67 spoof Casino Royale is more entertaining.

She's the best part of the film. Spoiler alert - Especially her explosive demise.

So many great Bond intros have been mentioned already!

I’ll choose another great one:

The Living Daylights. I love the briefing on the
Plane the action chase and the ending on the boat with the phone call “Better make that two.”

I’ve always liked the title song and credits for the film too. Maurice!

Daylights was the second James Bond in the theater for me too. I had seen Octopussy and hen missed a view to a kill somehow. Bought it on vhs as a blind buy.
By the time Daylights came out the 25th anniversary was in full swing. Loved seeing Happy anniversary 007 hosted by Roger Moore on ABC and previewing the film.

what a great time to grow up! Bond was very special then!

Isolated and on its own, The Spy Who Loved Me is my Number #1.

Tied at #1, as both an opening & film entire, is You Only Live Twice. So exotic and mystical; with Freddie Young setting the mood and teetering the aura towards the epic and expansive.

Add Goldfinger and that's my top 3.
