what should i do(recorder and player ques) (1 Viewer)

i am looking to buy a dvd recorder. i am looking at the pioneer 510. i also want to get more use out of my hdtv(i have direct tv) should i also get a dvd player that will upconvert?

so would it make sense for me to buy the pioneer 510, then buy a good dvd player that will upconvert the signal to hi def?
i also have read about new players coming out. ive got about 1000 to spend so the new players and recorders will probably be out of range for me.
