Yawn. I thought Spielberg would have requested a full scene-by-scene 4k restoration and brand new Dolby Atmos track or something along those lines to get it ready for a limited theatrical run. I'll just stick with my current 4k Blu-ray.

Some corrections to the top press release per Universal:

The release had a couple of typos. One was under the E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL 40TH ANNIVERSARY LIMITED EDITION STEELBOOK bullet. Our initial announcement said Target has 3 newly designed steelbooks. This isn’t accurate, Target only has one new steelbook designed.

and brand new Dolby Atmos track or something along those lines
DTS:X is "along those lines". That is the top of the line premium surround encode for DTS, and is their equivalent to Dolby's Atmos. Spielberg was a co-founder of the DTS audio system/company during production of the original Jurassic Park, so many of the films in his orbit come with DTS:X rather than Dolby's Atmos (I think the new Jurassic World disc also includes DTS:X).

Atmos is not the only premium audio format on the market.

The only new features seem to be "40 Years of E.T." and the TCM retrospective with Spielberg. I'm sure those will be good. But everything else listed is already on the original Blu-ray release from a decade ago. That edition was just labelled "Anniversary Edition" without a number, so the big change here is that Universal is willing to admit how old the film is.

I'd love to know how long those are and will be keeping a close eye on reviews for this edition. Hopefully Universal sends a copy out to one of HTF's fine reviewers before it comes out. That would help me decide whether a double dip is worthwhile.

I imagine it'll be the same DTS:X track that was on the initial UHD, though it's interesting that it will apparently now be included on the standard Blu, too.

I'm just glad they're keeping the DTS 2.0 rendering of the original stereo on there, as well. The DTS:X track (and 7.1 on the initial Blu-ray) retained some of the revisions that were done for the 2002 "Special Edition" which I find annoying. :)

I wanted to bump this thread to mention E.T. The Ultimate Visual History. It came out back in August but was running about $60 then, so I waited to see if the price would come down.

Amazon is currently selling it for $34.49 with an additional 15% off coupon to click on the product page, which brings the price down to $29.32+tax. So I jumped on it. It is written by Caseen Gaines, who also wrote the book We Don't Need Roads about the making of Back to the Future. The E.T. book is absolutely huge and gorgeous. I just got it, but even from a glance it is very apparent that there is a lot of really cool stuff in here. If you can, fans will definitely want to check this out.
