Track the Films You Watch (2011)

Ok, another year is among us but I guess it's best to start off (for the first time) with a warning of issues on the front page. I got several PMs last year from people having various issues with the front page so hopefully this won't happen this year. Some people had issues with the images. Some had issues with speed. Others had issues with being able to edit. A few larger threads had these issues fixed so hopefully there won't be as many problems going forward.

--This list is for keeping track of each film you watch throughout the year. Feature films and short films released from any year.

--Lists can have any format the poster wants but normally we keep the dates viewed, star rating as well as the year the film was released. Some might also select to keep track of which titles are new views. All of that is up to the poster.

--Feel free to discuss the films you're watching (even at over 1000 replies last year, it would be nice to have more reviews/discussions)..

Januray 3: King Arthur (2004) Dir. Antoine Fuqua -

3 out of 5: Alot to like about this film, particulalry Clive Owen as an unlikley King Arthur, but the scale of the film seems to outweigh the director's ability to keep it all in line. Overall, not a bad effort, but with much room for improvement.

January 8: An Education (2009) Dir. Lone Scherfig

4 out of 5: Superb performances, especially from Carey Mulligan. Though the subject matter brushes against creepy from time to time, the excellent production and solid direction produce a fine film.

January 8: Gone Baby, Gone (2007) Dir. Ben Affleck

4.5 out of 5: A brilliantly acted and directed effort by first-time director Ben Affleck. Casey Affleck is very, very good, as are the entire cast. Having seen several film adaptations of Dennis Lehane's novels, I felt this was the most raw and real of them all. Highly recommended.

January 10: Deja Vu (2006) Dir. Tony Scott

3.5 out of 5: Preposterous science but very entertaning thriller from Tony Scott. Terrorism, time-travel, and taut thrills conspire to produce a likeable movie. Denzel Washington is as good as always.

January 11: Case 39 (2006) Dir. Christian Alvert

2.5 out of 5: Lackluster effort in the supernatural thriller/horror genre. The utter lack of originality in premise or execution genuinely disappoints as the marketing for this film had piqued my interest. Full review here.

While the City Sleeps - Kicking off the new year with a selection from both the TSPDT Top 1000 list and the 250 Quintessential Noirs list. It's not especially worthy of either. The two-pronged plot covers the hunt for a serial killer and a power struggle at a news syndicate. The film packs a dynamite cast (including Dana Andrews, Thomas Mitchell, George Sanders, Ida Lupino, Rhonda Fleming and Vincent Price), most of whom are excellent. The story involving the journalists takes most of the spotlight, and it's got some compelling aspects with a lot of drama and betrayal and secret alliances. The killer thread, however, gets the short shrift. We get only the briefest of insights into the villain's psyche, and the forensic work is very ho-hum compared to your average procedural. It does allow for a pretty good chase scene, though. Unfortunately, that particular scene is one of only a small handful that display any sense of style. As with most of Lang's American films, it mostly feels entirely flat, with no passion or inspiration at all. It's competent, of course, but not much more than that. Watchable, passable... and ultimately forgettable. Rating: 7

Les maîtres fous - Apparently one of Herzog's favorite movies, and that's not hard to believe. It's a documentary short about the Hauka tribe (club? sect?) of West Africa, whose initiation ceremony is a bizarre bastardization of the social structure and mannerisms of their European colonial oppressors. The ritual involves foaming at the mouth, a stiltled herky-jerky walk, confessions and punishments, beatings, people being possessed by characters like "the mayor", "the general" and "the locomotive", and the sacrifice and subsequent consumption of a dog. It resembles some sort of primal explosion of frustrated satire. The ending of the film shows the participants happily back at their jobs, and suggests that the ritual helps them mentally cope with their daily lives. Although I was quite confused throughout most of it (due mostly to the very poor subtitles) I was also quite transfixed. An unusual and provocative work. Rating: 8

Chronique d'un eté - Another Jean Rouch documentary. In this one, he and co-director Edgar Morin start out by discussing the likelihood of getting truth out of subjects who know they are on camera. They then proceed to ask a variety of Parisians "Are you happy?"... at first during brief on-the-street interviews, and then going more in-depth with selected people. Throughout, you are constantly engaged with their openness and simultaneously questioning their honesty. Are they hamming it up for the camera when they talk in grandiose philosophical terms? How much of Marceline's concentration camp monologue is truth and how much is melodramatic flourish, and how does the camerawork affect our perception of that? In the end, Morin and Rouch screen the film for their subjects, get their reactions, and discuss the success or failure of their project. Wonderfully meta and, for the most part, fascinating. Rating: 8

Judex - A Robin Hood type character punishes a sinister banker for his misdeeds, and the plot thickens and thickens and thickens some more. Franju's homage to Feuillade is a real treat, and a reminder that I need to see more by both filmmakers. Certainly I'd like to see the original, since it seems right up Feuillade's alley, along the same lines as Les Vampires. Secret identities, twists galore, disguises, wacky gadgets, double crosses, daring escapes, homing pigeons, faked deaths, long-lost relatives, and a rooftop catfight. It's a ridiculously wild ride that probably works even better in serial format. Other nods to Feuillade include a character reading "Fantomas", and a girl (the smoking hot Francine Bergé, in a delightful performance) who gets to slink around in a catsuit, a la Musidora... in a double role, no less! Franju has a marvelous eye, lots of terrific shots. The Maurice Jarre score is lovely as well (though occasionally a little too subdued for the action). This is just a really, really fun movie that made me want more of the same. Rating: 9

Kameradschaft - Pabst's tale (inspired by a true event) of a group of German miners who come to the rescue of French miners. The film's heart is definitely in the right place (no matter what you may think of its slight Socalist leaning) but it's not done with very much nuance. Pretty much everyone is a great guy and pretty much everything turns out okay, and it just doesn't have the dramatic tension that it should. Part of this may be due to some odd pacing, a common problem with early talkies. However, it's a real knockout in the visuals department, featuring some absolutely stunning camerawork, especially down in those claustrophobic mines. Technically impressive, but a little on the dull side. Rating: 7

The Expendables (2010)

Not really a good movie but I consider it more of a guilty pleasure. The plot is the same as all the others where a lone girl is fighting against the evil organization responsible for the virus that was unleased on the world. Similar cast of character as all the others. Most die, some live with the inevitable sequel just around the corner.

I'm planning on viewing cult filmmakers/movies on Saturdays but it will probably just be one more week before I get burned out if the movies don't get any better.

Corpse Grinders, The (1971)

Kevin Sean Michaels

Enjoyable documentary about the 60+ year career of director Ted V. Mikels who is best known for his low-budget flicks like THE ASTRO-ZOMBIES, THE CORPSE GRINDERS and BLOOD ORGY OF THE SHE DEVILS. This film runs just over two hours and they actually have John Waters doing the narration and Mikels himself gets quite a bit of screentime. The director discusses the previously mentioned films as well as THE DOLL SQUAD, his 80s war films and of course his most recent work like THE CORPSE GRINDERS 2 and MARK OF THE ASTRO-ZOMBIES. There's certainly nothing overly terrific about this documentary but at the same time it's the only thing we currently have that takes a look at Mikels and his work. What makes the documentary worth watching is the interview with Mikels where he shares his stories about the making of his films as well as some of the criticism he has received over the years. The director comes across as an entertaining and charming person and certainly someone you'd love to discuss films with. It's that same thing that left me somewhat disappointed that the film didn't focus more on his long career. We brief get shown his editing equipment and we hear him say a couple times where he had to sell everything he owned to get a movie made. These stories are the most interesting thing here so I really wouldn't have enjoyed more of this stuff. This guy stuck around the business long after most had went into something else or simply retired so it would have been more entertaining hearing some of the stories about the trouble with low-budget films and how money did have to be raised. Francine York, Shanti and Tura Satana are among those interviewed.

Jennifer on My Mind (1971) BOMB

Noel Black

Rich boy Marcus (Michael Brandon) meets rich hippie chick Jennifer (Tippy Walker) on a trip in Italy and follows her back to America where she's constantly wanting him to get her weed. We're told all of this in flashbacks because in the current time Jennifer has died and Marcus is trying to figure out a way to get rid of her body. When then go back to the flashbacks to see Jennifer dump, disrespect and humiliate Marcus at every chance she gets. United Artist was apparently so embarrassed by this movie that the ended up cutting out fifteen-minutes worth of additional footage including some of Kim Hunter. It's also clear that the studio was embarrassed by this thing because for nearly forty-years it was impossible to see as it never had a VHS, Laserdisc or DVD release but thankfully MGM finally put it on Netflix just so people can see that the film's horrid reputation was deserved. I'm really not sure where to start on this thing because every single second is a complete disaster and for the life of me I can't understand what they were trying to do with this thing. The screenplay is without question one of the worst I've ever had the misfortune of seeing because the thing jumps around so much that you have to wonder why. Even stranger is why on Earth they have Marcus head over heels with this girl when there's never a single reason for him to care about her. They really don't have any relationship outside her treating him bad and the screenplay never makes it clear why he keeps going after her. The screenplay also doesn't know if it wants to be a comedy or drama because one second drugs are cool and then the next they're bad. One second you have some sort of fake love story trying to be told and then you get comedy adventures of Marcus trying to get rid of the body. One of these adventures includes him being attacked by Hells' Angels and another has a group of rednecks running him off the road. Brandon seems lost for the majority of the running time and Walker doesn't do much better. Her heroin fit towards the end of the movie is extremely poor and almost seems like an outtake from some of those drug movies of the 30s. I had been wanting to watch this movie for a good two decades now because of Robert DeNiro playing a Gypsy taxi driver. He's only in the film for a few minutes but there's no doubt that his steals the film and actually delivers a rather funny performance. Barry Bostwick and Jeff Conaway have small roles as well. JENNIFER ON MY MIND is without question one of the worst films of the decade but at the same time it's almost a must-see just for how bad it is. Fans of DeNiro will certainly want to see his pre-Scorsese trip in the taxi as it's the only thing that saves this from being one of the worst of all time.

01/01/11: SHE BEAST (Michael Reeves, 1966)

This is a popular title in the Gothic tradition of Italian Horror cinema – from one of its most prolific exponents but, in hindsight, not really among the best examples – that I had been rather longing to see. In fact, I acquired it first in an English-dubbed version (also available on R1 DVD) and, subsequently, with its original Italian soundtrack (which is how I watched it now – although I do not recall it ever having played on Italian TV)! Curiously enough, while the film was released in the U.S. as HORROR CASTLE, the DVD sports the literal English translation of the Italian title (which refers to a particularly nasty medieval torture device).

Incidentally, despite the modern-day setting, events unfold completely in a vast ancient German castle! Similarly, the presence of genre icon Christopher Lee (billed Cristopher in the original Italian credits!) as a mysterious and sinister-looking manservant – bearing WWII-induced facial scars – proves misleading, since he is not actually the villain of the piece (although his character still perishes in the obligatory fiery climax)! The killer on the loose (who can also be considered a monster, given his hideous pre-DR. PHIBES look – ludicrously, as a result of the real-life failed “Valkyrie” attempt on Hitler’s life, and possibly inspired by the seminal EYES WITHOUT A FACE [1959]!) is a Crimson Executioner-type torturer, albeit anticipating that very film by two years.

The heroine is played by Rossana Podesta` (soon to be divorced from the film’s producer Marco Vicario), who spends much of the time prowling the castle grounds and conveniently discovering victims’ bodies. Her husband (Georges Riviere) not only shuns her assertions to the ghastly goings-on but absents himself for periods on end which clearly points the finger of suspicion towards him; this notion, however, is dissipated when he finds himself trapped in a flooded underground cave straight out of Fritz Lang’s THE TESTAMENT OF DR. MABUSE (1933)! As it turns out, the real identity of the bloodthirsty maniac is not all that hard to guess – despite the film boasting the writing talents of Ernesto (1962’s THE HORRIBLE DR. HICHCOCK) Gastaldi and Edmond T. (the 1960 version of THE HANDS OF ORLAC) Greville! Interestingly, the film is accompanied by an incongruously jazzy score by Riz Ortolani which works rather well; its main asset, however, is the enveloping brooding atmosphere vividly rendered through stylish color photography.

While Margheriti started out in low-brow sci-fi, he seemed to really find his métier within the Gothic Horror stakes, following this first effort with such effective examples as two Barbara Steele vehicles shot in monochrome – CASTLE OF BLOOD (though its color remake WEB OF THE SPIDER, dating from 1970, was a disappointment) and THE LONG HAIR OF DEATH (both 1964), THE UNNATURALS (1969) and SEVEN DEATHS IN THE CAT’S EYE (1973). Had BEAST spent more time with the witch it certainly could have been much better. I've had VIRGIN sitting here for ages but have yet to get to it.

Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010)

James Mangold

Disappointing romantic-action-comedy has Tom Cruise playing secret agent Roy Miller who crosses paths with June (Cameron Diaz) in an airport and soon the two are wrapped up in drama as they try to escape the bad guys with a priceless battery the size of a AA that has the power to light an entire city. KNIGHT AND DAY made "news" for not doing that well at the box office but I really couldn't care how well or bad a film does since I don't have any stake in what they make. I know Cruise is a villain now days and many people want to see anything he does crash and burn but I'm not one of them. I've been a fan for years and continue to be one no matter what he does in his personal life. With that said, I have to side with those who called KNIGHT AND DAY a complete misfire. It's somewhat surprising to see so many positive reviews of this thing and if you read the good and bad stuff it seems you level of entertainment is going to depend on Cruise and Diaz. I personally found them to have zero chemistry and this pretty much killed everything else that was going on in the film. I didn't find their flirting to be charming and much of the romance just seems forced, uninspired and at times laughable. It's well known that the screenplay went through various stages with all sorts of actors being attached to the part and it's funny that Cruise was rumored to have turned down SALT, which was re-written for Jolie. The two films have quite a bit in common with the biggest one being the over-the-top action. Whereas Jolie made SALT fun no matter how stupid the story was the two stars here can't do the same thing. Cruise really comes across lazy, boring and just going by-the-numbers. Diaz is meant to be cute and charming but I found most of what she does here to be extremely annoying. The scene most have witness in the trailer where she's suppose to wait until three and run but instead runs after one is just poorly handled and doesn't work at all. Director Mangold had previously handled WALK THE LINE, COPLAND and HEAVY but sadly he adds very little here. The entire style is rather boring and the action scenes don't contain an ounce of energy or drama. KNIGHT AND DAY isn't a completely horrid film but it's simply a disappointing one that runs extremely cold and without much going for it.
