According to the article Ridley's first cut was 21' longer than the final theatrical cut. They could have had a much longer extended edition. Combining that with no 3D, no sale.

"First cut" doesn't necessarily mean "preferred cut." It would have gone through some fine-tuning and tightening.

Yeah, a first cut has everything in it (stuff that doesn't work, stuff that needs to be sped up so it does work) and is almost never fit for public viewing. Unless it's to study how cutting things out helps a movie, there's no reason to see an assembly cut.
