Sorry for 2 posts in a row. But I found a contradiction. In season 4 (Citizens Arrest) Barney and Andy reminisce about Barney being the Deputy for 10 years. Barney and Gomer also have an exchange in which Barney says he been on the beat for 10 years. However in season 5 (Barney’s Physical) there’s a party for Barney celebrating 5 years on the job. Which is it?

This, and other inconsistencies seem to be par for the course in long running sitcoms. TAGS is no exception.

For instance, within the first handful of episodes, Barney Fife is identified as Sheriff Andy Taylor's cousin, who he just recently hired as Deputy. After a few other cousin references in about the first half dozen or so episodes, I don't believe it is ever mentioned again in the course of the series, with Barney and Andy eventually morphing into being long time best friends. Their dynamic simply worked far better that way than with the nepotistic cousin narrative.
