A couple bucks for the adapters.

A RS SPL meter and a spreadsheet will suffice. Perfect? No, but definitely servicable.

I'm proof that brains are an option when using the BFD.

Can someone explain to me why XLR is so important. I have seen many of the top end amps come with them and I have thought all my life they were for like performers and concert gigs not HT gigs.... Thanks.

An XLR is a balanced connection. Tends to be much more resistant to noise I believe.

Exactly....so much better suited for longer cable lengths.

Believe it or not, but some manufacturers just hook up the external XLR connectors to single ended circuitry inside the box.

And, XLR connectors done right does require some additional circuitry inside the box. If that circuitry isn't done right, noise can be added, not lowered.
