Sony just announced that the release date for Tom Holland's Spider-Man 3 is now November 5, 2021, instead of July 16. It would be nice if Sony would announce an actual title for this at some point soon, but it's just the updated release date for now.

Disney, which has a 25% in the new Spider-Man film per their renegotiated deal with Sony, moved Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to accommodate this. That film will now open in March 25, 2022.

Sony's Uncharted movie, which will also star Tom Holland, is taking Spider-Man's original release date, so it appears that will shoot first when the pandemic subsides.

Belated edit only to fix typo.

Apparently, Peter is going to be surrounded by Hyundai vehicles in the next film. I just hope this crass commercialism doesn't distract from the storytelling.

Ugh. Leave it to Amy Pascal and Sony to get crass like this.

I will say that similar use of product placement in the more recent James Bond movies has been only somewhat noticeable.

It all depends on how it's done. The world is filled with corporate logos so I tend to find it takes me out of a movie more when people are drinking "BEER" rather than an actual brand. That being said, I hope everyone is simply driving Hyundai cars rather than making sure the camera lingers on the Hyundai logo for no reason other than they got a paycheck.

Yeah the real world is full of product placement, so that doesn't take me out of the movie. It's when they do stuff like "We need to go right now! Go get my HYUNDAI GENESIS out of the garage!" that it becomes stupid.

It's not so much verbal references - it's more when it's patently obvious there's a specific product on display.

For instance, in the awful Sandler movie "Jack and Jill", an entire subplot appears to exist solely to advertise a cruise line.

No one expects movies to strip away all brands - the old generic "BEER" and whatnot was worse than product placement! - but when it's clear shots/scenes exist solely for corporate overlords, that's a problem!

Sony has pushed back the film slightly to December 17, 2021. It takes the spot recently vacated by Avatar 2. Although this is a different iteration of the character, this is actually the same weekend that Sony used to launch Into the Spider-Verse back in 2018.

I would classify this less as a delay and more as grabbing a prime release slot. It’s in the same season, even if it is 5-6 weeks later.

Well, it is a delay technically, but you are absolutely correct that the reason is they think December 17 will be a better date for it. Not because they think they couldn't deliver by November.

It's still strange to me that Uncharted is in first position for Tom Holland over this movie, given that he signed onto playing Spider-Man before he signed onto Uncharted.

I agree but I am guessing that it is Sony's choice, since they are the studio on both projects. (Well, Disney is co-financing Spider-Man, but still.). It might also have something to do with the fact that Uncharted was about to shoot before the virus happened, so they presumably have their sets and costumes and stuff ready to go. Putting Spider-Man second gives them more time to work on it, which is fine with me. I'd rather they not rush it anyway. Far From Home is my favorite Spider-Man movie we've ever had and I really want the next one to stay on that level, so I'll wait. I really don't care what happens with Uncharted, personally.

We also don't know yet what kind of measures will have to be taken on screen in relation to the virus. I don't want to have to see Peter stand six feet apart from MJ or whatever, so if shooting Spider-Man second helps them be safer with regard to what they can film, that would be my preference. Again, I don't know what's in the script, but that's just what I'm thinking.

I just realized that WB had previously set Black Adam for release on December 22, 2021, which is only five days later. I assume Warner will move that now. There's no way they're going to want to face Spider-Man directly, especially after the terrific response to the last film and its big cliffhanger.

I didn't realize Sony was behind Uncharted too. It makes sense they'd want to prioritize the tentpole that they don't have to share profits on.

Has the second season of "Euphoria" finished shooting? I could see that being a logistical obstacle for Zendaya.

No, it had to be shut down in March due to the pandemic. I think they were only a few days in. However, it would seem that she is in first position for Spider-Man. As you noted with Holland, she signed onto Spider-Man a long time before Euphoria even existed. I think Euphoria would wait for her if need be. HBO has had long hiatuses between seasons of some of their other shows before.

I think I read somewhere around the time that Far From Home came out that Jon Watts said somewhere that he would like to use Kraven the Hunter, but that's not official. No one has been announced as joining the cast yet.

Obviously, the primary issue at the beginning of the film will have to involve resolving the cliffhanger from the last film. I really hope that they don't do a time jump of any kind and just pick up right there. I really want to see how this situation plays out for Peter in the immediate term.

There is an unsourced, unsubstantiated rumor that the third film will be called Spider-Man: Homesick.

If true, this would fit with their obsession with getting the word Home in there every time. If the film involves Peter going on the run following being framed for murder and terrorism, it would make sense that he is homesick. However, presumably clearing his name would be part of the film, and if that's the case, he would only be homesick for part of it. Plus, this has a far more negative connotation than Homecoming or Far From Home. So.I don't know if that would be a great idea.

I would suggest to Sony and Marvel that, perhaps, they don't need the word Home in the title. The audience is smart enough to know that it is the sequel to Far From Home without having that word in common.

In the meantime, I will only going to update the thread title when we have official confirmation on the final title. It would be nice if that came sooner or later, though, just so that we could have something to call the movie.

Oh boy, that’s a terrible title. I’m all for getting rid of “Home” in the title, but if they must, “Homefront” is preferable, and would signify the movie is about Peter’s, um, home.

I never really understood the obsession with the word "Home" in the first place. "Homecoming" has the cool double meaning because Peter is coming home to Marvel's care, but the actual dance is a very minor plot point in it because he leaves almost as soon as he gets there. Although I love the movie, of Far From Home is rendered kind of irrelevant because Peter had been farther from home in Infinity War when he went to space. So, in geographic terms, going to Europe is not that far. So I absolutely think they should go with whatever title is the best for the movie whether the name Home is in it or not.
