I have a 6.1 speaker configuration (only one surround back speaker) and a Denon AVR 3805 Receiver which can decode PLIIx and Dolby Digital EX.

Is PLIIx the same as DD Ex under a 6.1 speaker configuration ?

In other words, for a 6.1 speaker system, which is the optimum decoder to use (PLIIx or DD Ex) when watching movies encoded with regular Dolby Digital 5.1 sound?

Will someone (that has a 6.1 speaker configuration) benefit upgrading from a receiver that only has DD Ex decoding to a receiver with PLIIx?

Your help is appreciated. Thanks

In the 6.1-speaker mode, the decoder can offer you DD EX (a movie mode) and DD+PLIIx Music. There is no "PLIIX Movie" mode because that is DD EX, and there would be no difference. When there is 7.1-speaker system, then the DD+PLIIx Movie mode is available separate from DD EX (which in this case outputs mono from Lb/Rb speakers).

For a 6.1 system, the main benefit is PLIIx Music is that if there are some 5.1 (non-EX) movies that decode with EX giving too much emphasis to the back speaker, then using DD+PLIIx Music mode will help that--it keeps more sound coming from the Ls/Rs.
