Synopsis: Before FAME, PINK FLOYD: THE WALL, THE COMMITMENTS, and EVITA, acclaimed director Alan Parker redefined the movie musical with his first feature length film. Set in 1929 New York City, BUGSY MALONE captures a flashy world of would-be hoodlums, showgirls, and dreamers—all portrayed by child actors. As Tallulah, the sassy girlfriend of the owner of Fat Sam's Grand Slam Speakeasy, future superstar Jodie Foster leads a talented cast. Parker's sharp script, combined with the music and lyrics of Paul Williams (PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE) makes for an irresistible satire that's truly one-of-a-kind. Available for the first time in the US on Blu-ray, in celebration of its 45th Anniversary, this limited-edition has been remastered from the original film elements.

Special Features and Technical Specs:
  • NEW 4K RESTORATION OF THE FILM
  • NEW Give a Little Love: Paul Williams on Bugsy Malone
  • NEW Filmmaker Focus: Executive producer David Puttnam on Bugsy Malone
  • Theatrical Trailers
  • Optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature

Hopefully, this will look much better than the very old region B blu-ray. I must say, a rather like the eclectic releases on the Paramount Presents series!

How is this film? Have always wanted to see it. Worth purchasing? I may just go digital if it's only mediocre.

I enjoyed this movie when it first came out and saw it several times theatrically. I watched it recently on TCM, and either the film or I have not aged well.

I imagine this would look better than my Region B Blu ray ... which does in fact look very good. I'll wait for comparative reviews before deciding to upgrade. Anything witih Jodie Foster in it is worth upgrading if possible!

I thoroughly enjoy BUGSY MALONE! It doesn't redefine the genre but it's a fun, silly way to spend 90 minutes. Nothing more, nothing less. With this announcement and A PLACE IN THE SUN... dare we hope for THE DAY OF THE LOCUST (the imprint disc is... "negligible") or even better, Nat King Cole, Cab Calloway, Mahalia Jackson, Eartha Kitt, Pearl Bailey, and Ruby Dee in the Vista Vision musical ST LOUIS BLUES? A lost treasure for the extraordinary cast alone. Hope springs eternal!

I remember Paramount announcing the DVD in the early 2000's. Then it was cancelled. I figured they lost distribution rights. Glad to see it being released finally and with a 4k restoration.

I get the concept, but it's never quite resonated with me. (To be fair, I've only seen it once when it was first released in theaters.) The dubbed singing isn't particularly striking, and the storyline is rather precious. Some of the kid actors just aren't very good.

Not certain as to why Bugsy Malone is making me think of Warren Beatty, but I certainly do hope that Paramount will give us a 2021 release of “Heaven Can Wait”.

And speaking of Bugsy Malone, Paramount and Jodie Foster, I also hope that there will be considerations for a Blu Ray release of her first Oscar winning performance which, of course, is The Accused.

I have always assumed the theme song from Freaky Friday, released in the same 12-month span as this and Taxi Driver, was Jodie Foster's actual voice.

I'm surprised to learn she (and apparently everybody else) was dubbed here.

Probably, because Beatty starred as Bugsy Siegel in the Columbia movie "Bugsy".

Groundbreaking Films Arrive on Blu-ray™ this August with New Bonus Content

Three acclaimed cinematic classics join the collectible Paramount Presents line with the Blu-ray release of A PLACE IN THE SUN and NASHVILLE on August 10, 2021 and BUGSY MALONE, making its U.S. Blu-ray debut on August 31, from Paramount Home Entertainment.

A PLACE IN THE SUN

Director George Stevens’ masterwork A PLACE IN THE SUN won six* Academy Awards® and is widely considered one of the finest works of America cinema. Remastered from a 4K film transfer in celebration of its 70th anniversary, the film is presented on Blu-ray with a brand-new Filmmaker Focus featuring film historian Leonard Maltin talking about George Stevens and the innovative film techniques he used for this unforgettable story of ambition, passion, and betrayal. The disc also includes previously released bonus content, including commentary by George Stevens, Jr. and Ivan Moffat, retrospective cast and crew interviews, and a segment on George Stevens featuring filmmakers who knew him.

Montgomery Clift stars as George Eastman, a young man determined to win a place in respectable society and the heart of a beautiful socialite (Elizabeth Taylor). Shelley Winters is the factory girl whose dark secret threatens Eastman’s professional and romantic prospects.

NASHVILLE

Director Robert Altman’s seminal film NASHVILLE remains an essential classic of 70s cinema with its complexly textured portrayal and critique of America’s obsession with celebrity and power. Newly remastered from a 4K scan of original elements, the film is presented on Blu-ray with a new featurette entitled “24 Tracks: Robert Altman’s Nashville.” The disc also includes a previously released commentary by Altman.

Fittingly, NASHVILLE is Volume 24 of the Paramount Presents line as the film follows 24 distinct characters with intersecting storylines over five days in the titular city. The phenomenal ensemble cast includes Ned Beatty, Ronee Blakley, Keith Carradine, Karen Black, Geraldine Chaplin, Henry Gibson, Michael Murphy, Lily Tomlin, Shelley Duvall, Scott Glenn, Jeff Goldblum, and Barbara Harris.

BUGSY MALONE

Acclaimed director Alan Parker redefined the movie musical with his first feature-length film, BUGSY MALONE, which celebrates its 45th anniversary this year. Available for the first time in the U.S. on Blu-ray, the film has been remastered from the original elements for this limited-edition release. The Blu-ray includes a new Filmmaker Focus delving into this early work from the director of Fame, The Commitments, Pink Floyd: The Wall, Mississippi Burning, and Evita.

Parker’s sharp script, combined with the music and lyrics of Paul Williams, makes for an irresistible satire that’s truly one-of-a-kind.

The limited-edition Paramount Presents Blu-ray Discs™ come in collectible packaging featuring a foldout image of each film’s theatrical poster and an interior spread with key movie moments. Each disc also includes access to a digital copy of the film.

I love that anyone would consider Bugsy Malone "groundbreaking" or that it "redefined the movie musical." It was a huge flop, later got a cult because 80s kids discovered it on TV and you know how THAT goes, and now suddenly it's a classic. I suffered through it with an audience of about thirty back in the day and I've suffered through it on DVD and Blu-ray. My suffering it days are over, I'm afraid.
